Hell, I just think it's funny that he took over for Malzahn at Arkansas State, and now he's doing it again at Auburn.

It's a pretty safe hire with a potentially high upside.

He's got a good record of G5 level success that strongly suggests he won't tank the program. At worst, they're probably looking at the same results they got with Gus. If he can bring the same level of success he got at Boise to the P5 level, then obviously it's a really good hire.

Biggest concern - he's a Pacific NW guy. Can he translate that to success in the southeast - particularly in recruiting. Pretty much the same issue as Leach without the pirate personal to play.

As I understand it, BSU has a tremendous advantage over the rest of the MWC in terms of talent and facilities.

Talent perhaps, but apparently Harsin and BSU admins butted heads big time on financial commitment to the program. He publicly called them out on it, and that’s why some BSU fans don’t like him.

On paper he is a better hire than Sam Pittman, Lane Kiffin and Eli Drinkwitz from last year.

You kidding? Mizzou dodge a bullet! He isn't a good recruiter and wanted 5 Million but Mizzou went with Drinkwitz who is a lot better recruiter and is very good with the offense. Once he gets his players on the field in three years and that should make a huge difference. Also he is gaining experiences as he continues to coach at Mizzou.
Harsin might do well at Auburn because he will have other coaches that should help him with recruiting. Auburn is a top 15 in recruiting class every year. Mizzou top 30. Give Drinkwitz time to change that. Odom had Mizzou at 30s to 40s when he was the HC at Mizzou. That is why Missouri is struggling to beat teams with better talents. Drinkwitz did beat 4 teams with better talents!

Well, tRant thinks he is dogshit, so if you go against that you'll probably be proven right.

I think he’s pretty cool. Glad we didn’t go with the typical SEC coordinator.

Go try something different.

I mean he has his hands full with recruiting this year but if he can get some good assistants I think he will be all right.

Probably. It's not an awful hire, especially when compared to some of the other names floated for Auburn in the past week. But, recruiting is the name of the game in the SEC. We needed a slam dunk recruiter. Don't think Harsin is that.

He is a decent hire. A good head coach at a smaller school. It will take time though.

Not sure if the Plains are patient enough - he will lose 4 games/year his first few years in the SEC - no doubt. Huge difference in what he was playing to what he’ll be up against in the SEC west.

Big P5 to P5 hires aren't happening that much anymore though.

The equivalent of your Jimbo hire isn't that common - a guy who wants to go, a school who doesn't mind him going and a school willing to pay huge money to make a move at roughly the same level seem reasonable on paper. When any decent coach is making 4/5 million, unless it's a perfect scenario you're at 6/7+ to make a move from a big program to another big program make sense.

Auburn's only shot at that was Cristobal, and we probably won't know what we did/didn't do there for a while. Otherwise you've got internal promotions and top coordinator hires (LSU, UGA, OSU, Clemson, etc.)

This certainly isn't a hire I thought we'd make. But I'm not sure it's any worse than anything else we were considering, and the slate we were considering/talking to (Napier, Venables, Elliot, etc.) would probably be the same names for most big P5 schools this year. And I'm sure we weren't in a position to chase 7+ million dollar coaches in light of the buyout and revenue hit from 2020.

Hugh Freeze - since they've proven they don't care about the NCAA already
Napier - should have let him bring in his own staff
Tony Elliot - probably due to the restrictions

I give them credit for trying, but the boosters wanted a puppet, and they got that in Harsin.

He’s a good football coach. Whether or not he is right at AU is tbd. AU is one of the toughest places to win due to its annual schedule and recruiting competition.

Harsin's very innovative with offense.

Just too many variables. He’s not a sure thing. He’s not kept Boise where it was prior to his arrival there. I personally don’t think he’ll be better than Gus but I guess he could. Just no reason to believe that now.

It's a good hire. Auburn could've done a lot worse.
