AM fans after Elko's hot start was Jimbo still the right choice?

We were told for years Jimbo is an elite coach and had even past Saban after the fluke upset. Non AM fans said different that Jimbo was a con man.
This just shows how far removed from great football the AM fan base is, that they fell for Jimbo hook line and sinker.
Elko just proving how stupid the AM fan base is.

First off, fan bases are not a monolith on such topics.
We have our disagreements, and you can bet plenty of Aggies were aghast at Jimbo getting that huge extension and raise; of course most new coaches and especially ones that come at a high price and having won a championship will bring high expectations and there's nothing wrong with that. But many of us knew that O was "turrible". And of course his control over the program was weak and got worse progressively.
From an offensive scheme standpoint, Jimbo was a wrong choice all along. From a program profile standpoint, I guess trying to buy a championship by money whipping a coach from "his" university where he won a championship was kind of a bold move.
Hindsight is always 20/20.

Jimbo was good until we gave him a contract extension that gave no incentive to win. We’ll probably do the same thing to Elko after this year if he finishes strong.
I don’t remember the last coach we had that we didn’t give a stupid extension to.

I can answer honestly.
I was stoked for Fisher to be the new HC. I was hook, line, and sinker bought into the hype. But somewhere on tRant, some Florida State fan put out a good post about his perceived shortcomings of Fisher and his staff at FSU. Notably was a treasure trove of recruits coming in every year but a major blind spot on the O Line. the FSU teams would rise against major opponents and then lose an inexplicable game against an inferior team.
That guy may as well have been the worlds best fortune teller- he was spot on.
What the Fisher experience has taught me is that coaches will tell you who they are with their history. Years ago, when Elko was DC, I happened to have a 20 minute conversation with him while my son was at an A&M football camp. Since that day on, I've been impressed with him and his no nonsense approach. I feel like we are seeing it this year, and I hope I'm not falling for the Fandom homerism. Time will tell, but Elko has put his stamp on his expectation of his Standards.

SEC Championship or gone, tired of rewarding almost, next year, and mediocrity. A discussion can be had for Atlanta appearance.

I don't know where he got the "QB whisperer" tag, honestly. He has recruited and grown better and more numerous talent at RB. Including A&M's current set of amazing RBs but also the ones NFL plucked while probably zero A&M receivers and maybe 1 QB made it to the NFL among Jimbo's recruiting classes.
No guarantee that Elko/Klein offense will be great for putting up huge O stats and featuring multiple receivers. But at least Klein has shown he can and will alter his game calling based on talent he has available. Let's see if they can make any high 4-star or 5-star WRs land.

Based on some of the topics started today, it’s pretty apparent which posters are nervous about Elko’s potential success.
Sort of a textbook display, actually. You’ve got TheFourHorsemen trying to deflect by bringing up Jimbo, and MtVernon calling him juvenile names and trying to question his coaching decisions.
It’s delicious.

He was elite at developing college system quarterbacks in the 2000's and early 2010's.
When all the RPOs, HUNH, and the rest came along, he was a dinosaur.

Hindsight is always 2020, you make the best moves you can in the moment and live with those choices.
We don't get Elko without Jimbo, for one - so in a way it's worked itself out. Was there someone better we could have taken in 2018 or should we have kept Sumlin? The answer is no.
The only idiot thing our program did was give a 10 year 7.5 million dollar extension in 2021. That was the dumb move, but the big money paid the buyout and now we have Elko.

Yea, hopefully we learned from that stupid dumb money move and don't repeat the same mistake.
But as someone already said, there's more than 50-50 chance that we will give a huge raise to Elko after just this first season, when he is benefiting from Jimbo's leftover talent.
(yes, I have a deep-seated BAS. Apologies).

No.

What an abysmal cycle, Jimbo was probably the best hire because at least the program was in somewhat decent shape when he left.

Nebraska hit a home run with former quarterback Scott Frost returning to Lincoln, with Florida (Dan Mullen), Texas A&M (Jimbo Fisher), UCLA (Chip Kelly) and Florida State (Willie Taggart) rounding out the top five hires. The next tier features Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State, along with Chad Morris at Arkansas and Kevin Sumlin at Arizona.

As an Ole Miss fan you should know a con man when you see one. In fact, you see one most Saturdays during football season.
Now... GFY

A&M has the money to offer ridiculous bonuses for Championships even with a high base salary.
Donors would pull $10 million dollars out of their couch cushions for a championship.
No more fully guaranteed BS.

is that all you got?
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A&M AND MISSISSIPPI, IS THAT WE WILL PAY TENS OF MILLIONS TO GET RID OF A BAD COACH, AND YOU WILL PAY MUCH LESS TO HANG ON TO ONE!
