And how they got there is not what we expected.

Da frick. They went 7-6 that year. How were they preseason #1 after what Alabama did the year before?

Not true. I decided we should claim 2009.

Because they went 10-2 the year before. Matt Barkley was the preseason Heisman favorite too.

Just dropping in to say that USC did not win the title that year and 2004 will forever trigger me. Congrats on the unintended troll of this Aubie

USC had a great season in 2011 and returned most of their starters the following year.

Well in the BCS era you had to be perfect and/or near-perfect to get in.

Come the frick on. They had Ed Orgeron on staff for crying out loud.

Since USC had their title revoked, technically Florida State in '99 was the last team to achieve this.

So which team was the last to go start to finish without losing the #1 ranking? USC? I assume nobody toppled them since they were undefeated.

USC if you don't count the fact that they had their whole season vacated. Besides that, Florida State in 1999.

Edit: Nevermind, they only had their final two games vacated. Not the whole season. Point still stands.

Okay. Though actually point doesn't stand specifically because the AP (I assume we're talking AP) has a history of completely ignoring the NCAA's attempts to vacate games.

Preseason rankings are completely arbitrary when it comes to the playoff. They should rid them and not release an official Top 25 until Week 6.

That's pretty much exactly what they do. The playoff rankings are the 'official' rankings and don't start until late October. The AP and others have no relevance to the playoffs.

Just put Saban preseason #1 and you are right half the time (last decade)

Crazy they have actually missed for this long, all the times they put Bama just fell on the random year Bama doesn’t win

I guess we are talking about the AP, since the BCS didn't do preseason polls. But the entire point of the BCS was to centralize and legitimize the Mythical National Championship, so my gut reaction is who cares what the AP thinks beyond preseason. Interesting semantics and distinction.

The CFP rankings only come out late season for that very reason.

And the committee has done a good job of ignoring the polls when they create their rankings, especially at the top 4.

I feel like each year Saban tries more and more bizarre ways to end up in the championship game.

It's like going undefeated in 2009 bored him so he's been nuzlocke challenging himself ever since.

The point is that it's rare to be preseason AP#1 and actually win it all. Being preseason is a nice honor but it puts a bullseye on your back and sets a high level of expectation while also being rat poison. It's just odd that it's so rare especially going wire to wire (twice '99 and '04).
