UCLA is a very tough job. I don't know if I would take that job. Wooden is their God and anything less is a disappointment. That is pretty hard to replicate in today's environment.

I believe that was said about UA and Bryant at one time. Any coach that is afraid of taking on a challenge like that is not worth having.

Very well said.

It's also the reason why I don't always think coaches want to go to a big name tradition-rich school.

Exactly.

Bring Marshall in for a visit and walk him through the football facilities, trophy room and let him meet Lord Saban.

That should do it.

According to the article they didn't even get to "talk" so who knows what they did or didn't offer. I think you are making quite a few assumptions to fit your preconceived notions.

You think they didn't float an amount to his agent/"representative"? I know y'all aren't that naive.
The article doesn't say whether they got into discusssions at all - just that Marshall obviously got pissed that Dan Patrick didn't even mention his team making it to the final four.

To be fair, I also think there may have been some concerns about potential NCAA violations with some of the articles that came out about what went down under Howland right before he was canned. It ended up ok, but hindsight is also 20/20.

Is it customary for agents or a search firm to offer salary and compensation packages to a coach through the coaches representative? Or do they usually have a formal or informal sit down or phone call to discuss things
directly with each party?

When your team is still in the tournament, it's not uncommon for representatives to go over the details and relay those to "put out feelers" so to speak. It happens quite a bit on the basketball end and how you end up with the good ol' "I didn't talk to anyone" coach speak.

Gene Bartow followed Wooden and had a combined record of 52-9 and a final four then left for UAB..now there`s pressure.

Here's the opposite of a denial from Marshall's people.

"It would have to be something extraordinary because they do love Wichita so much."

I just don't see Alabama basketball as extraordinary. I just see this as agentspeak. That's an agents job, get more bidders, get more money.

Been to Wichita . . . once.

Didn't see much of it, but was not impressed with what I did see.

He didn't have to comment on it at all. They didn't comment on Mizzou last year in the middle of the process.

You can say that he may be trying to get some programs to get off the pot, but him speaking on the subject is a deviation from the standard IMO.

It's like a damn smoke signal for Indiana though.

Haven't read the whole thread, but this seems like something that Alabama would leak for the purposes of alerting other coaches who may be more realistic candidates that Alabama is willing to spend to make a good hire. I don't think Marshall is a realistic candidate. I also don't think they would have leaked info like that if he was.

Well you're a highfalutin bama boy. Of course you didn't see nothing to brag about.

Here the bottom line: Unless Marshall feels UA is his destination job, he would be foolish to gamble his career for a small difference in money. At WSU he is and will be a hot commodity until his destination jobs (Duke, Kansas, UK, NC) opens up. At Bama he could crash and burn, and never have a chance at those jobs. Ego trumps money every time with Coaches.

It wouldn't be a small difference in money. It would be almost double his current salary with no real ceiling.

And ego follows money.

I'll be surprised if he takes the Bama job, too. But they're making a legit run at him. If they didn't, the Rant would be lined up telling them they're stupid for not making a run at him.

I agree. It almost seems like there is too much info and people are speaking a little too openly.

Alabama just put out a bag of money and they are hiding behind a bush waiting to see who will grab it.
