re: Alabama buddy has new perspective on recruiting since NIL and can't say I disagree

I wasn't shocked about NIL, but I was shocked my buddy now basically ignores recruiting, which he followed so closely for years! It's clear NIL and the transfer portal have changed college football forever, but at what cost. I have friends that have been avid college football fans forever, and now they still watch but the passion is gone.

Exactly. Was “show me your facilities “ and now “show me your checkbook”.

Recruiting still matters.
Maybe for some positions. For QB the portal is everything

Need to reinstitute sitting a year when you transfer. Would shut down a lot of nonsense but NCAA has to do that.

Your friend is smart. I too now see verbal commitments and decomittments as bargaining chips. I’m all for players getting paid and paid well. But, these are kids are going to run shite in the ground without them being deemed employees with contracts.
I see some ugly things happening at Signing Day. A lot flips. Schools not being able to make payments and some schools making payments at the midnight hour.

Nil has killed my love for the college game. Has killed the pageantry and history and what made CF special compared to the NFL where your fav player on your fav team may play for your rival the very next year.
I likely will still watch Bama games next year, some top SEC ones and a few top non conference ones, but I think over the next 3 years my viewership will likely drop off by 50% plus. I did this with the NFL 15 years ago and now it's barely any full games a year. But that's just one guys opinion not predicting anything overall.
I'm right there with you! Can't tell you when was the last time I watched an NFL game and that includes the Super Bowl. What's crazy is, it was only a few years ago that coaches couldn't buy a kid a coke, but now you can buy them the entire restaurant and convenience store.
Sadly, this is just getting started, so it's only going to get worse!

Totally agree. This really was highlighted with Musselman for us, IMO.

It’s a more level playing field with recruiting by the top d1 schools. Bama May still be good but so will the other top football schools.

The intense loyalty we feel for our Alma maters or favorite team is completely gone now for players. The days of Billy Bob Smith out of a small town in your state being a hero, have been eviscerated. A guy will be revered after a great season, everybody will rush out and buy his jersey, he’ll be the talk of every diner and water cooler in the state. Only to who’re himself to the highest bidder and transfer to a rival.
In the future will a school have Heisman trophy winner transfer to another school in the same conference? Will they still retire his jersey? Will they boo him if they meet up in the playoffs?

You have to constantly recruit guys who are currently on your roster.

I wish they would bring it back also, but I don't see that happening. If they tried, there would be a ton of lawsuits and I don't think the courts would rule in favor of the NCAA anyway. Once the cat is out of the bag, it's pretty much game over!

Loyalty, without the action it prompts, is just a bad case of mistaken identity. That's where we are. It's hard to digest for those who are loyal by nature and follow these players from the moment they start being recruited. To watch your favorite players going across the bidding block like it's a Barrett-Jackson auction is not something hardcore fans will get used to.

think I'm starting to feel the same way.
