Aggies - Braden Shewmake appears to have the inside track to start at SS for the Braves

Mark Bowman is the Braves MLB beat guy and he doesn't miss with this sort of stuff.
Mark Bowman - Braves Opening Day Roster Projection
He's had a great spring and everybody in the organization loves his defense and approach. Great representative for your program.

Shortstop (1): Braden Shewmake
Choosing between Shewmake and Grissom feels like picking a No. 8 vs. No. 9 game in the NCAA tourney. Shewmake is the better defensive option. He might benefit from another month or two of at-bats at the Triple-A level. But with Grissom not playing shortstop for a fourth straight day on Saturday, I’ll follow the clues and trust my gut.

Glad to hear. He hasn't exactly torn the cover off the ball the last 2 years so it's somewhat unexpected when Grisson looked solid in the bigs last year.

At this point I think they're looking at that spot as a pure defensive situation. They really hoped Grissom would show signs this spring that he could hold down the fort defensively, but it doesn't sound like they've seen enough (at least not at this point).

Yea - Bowman whiffed big time on this one. So did everyone else.
For context both Shewmake and Grissom got optioned to AAA yesterday, which were not the moves that anyone expected.

I was definitely surprised by the way both those guys played this spring. I don't think it has as much to do with gaining a year of control for shewmake. Arcia had an 104 OPS+ and they trust his glove more than Grissom. New shift rules. Adrianza had a good spring as well and they didn't want to release him.

Agree - this isn't a contract manipulation situation. Honestly, I think they hoped they'd be comfortable with Grissom being an above average MLB defensive shortstop by the end of spring and they just aren't at this point. Once they decided that, they wanted to give Shewmake's bat more of a look to see if they thought it could be serviceable in the 9 hole (confirmed their earlier beliefs that it can't be at this point).
So the default was Arcia, who is a serviceable defensive shortstop who isn't a total offensive dud. I don't think it was the option they were hoping for, but I think it was always on their board as a possibility. Down in Gwinnett Grissom will continue working to get comfortable with all the aspects of being a MLB SS and Shewmake will keep working on his offensive game in.
Not super excited about it but we'll survive.

100%. The good news of the spring is they found a little extra pitching depth with Dodd and Shuster. Soroka starts Wednesday so that's exciting. Hopeful for him
Also anybody see how Dansby has been doing...I know it's spring ball but it is...intriguing...

I enjoyed watching him play at A&M, one of if not the best player from the Childress era. Glad he has recovered from that nasty injury last year.

That’s great news.
Hell of a natural talent. Good attitude and glad to see he’s putting it together.

Grissom will be called up soon enough. It's a weird looking move, but if anyone has proven that they know what they're doing - especially with young players - the Braves' front office does.

Shewmake is probably a utility guy at most in the majors but he should be able to pick it and has a good approach. Won’t offer much power wise I would imagine. I remember wondering if he could fill out in a pro S&C program and add more pop but it doesn’t seem that happened. I hope he gets a chance later in the year to play in the majors, seems like he will

You know what former Aggie, well, he never made it to campus (but had signed as a QB) I pulled for to make the Majors? Kohl Stewart. I think he made it at some point but got injured.

Ironically, Arcia is the guy Shewmake should try to emulate. If he can hit even slightly, there will always be room on a roster spot for guys who can play good defense at multiple positions.
