Not trying to start anything to distract from the main situation, but that in itself is pretty irresponsible
Let us say you have a young man brandishing a gun. You call that an active shooter because maybe, potentially, a guy who might shoot someone doesn't really keep people out of the way as well while the cops arrest him.

Just got a text from my cousin who goes to school there. Said no shots have been fired, they have one person in custody and are looking for another.

And the answer to "what in the actual frick is wrong with this country?" is the 24-hour news cycle. When there are multiple networks devoted to all news, all the time, they have to have content. So potential nut jobs hear of other nut jobs who pull this shite and think, I can do that too! Social media has made things exponentially worse because now WE become the news and perpetuate it with tweeting links, posts, etc. I'm not sure it's all that much worse than it's ever been, but not we all know about it in real time and become part of the story, making it bigger than ever.

We are. There's relevancy to discussion on previous shootings. We're not first responders or anything here. Just discussing a tragic event on a college football message board.
