Word is that student was on Drill Field contemplating suicide. Someone else yelled gun and caused the mass panic. The guy did not have a weapon.

Officials identified active shooter suspect as Fhu-Qui Cong Nguyen, a freshman from Madison at press conference. No weapons were found and no charges have been filed yet.

Nope. And despite hundreds of tweets claiming they heard gunshots, it never happened.

Humans are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.

WAPT

n an interview with 16 WAPT’s Scott Simmons, Gov. Phil Bryant said the suspect, who was later identified as Nguyen, had considered joining the U.S. Army and had been in communications with an Army recruiter. Bryant said the suspect notified the recruiter that he was considering suicide. The recruiter contacted authorities and police tracked the suspect to MSU, where he was arrested.

Ok so I'm not saying this isn't what happened, but what was he going to commit suicide with on the drill field if he didn't have a weapon?

He just told the Army officer he was contemplating suicide so they tracked him down. I agree with caution but man this was overkill and hysteria.

What would he be arrested for? Thinking about suicide?

This was handled very poorly

We just need to torture the people who do this to death

I would agree but the problem is 90% of the time the cowards kill themselves first.

Spree killers have impacted our collective psyche in ways you don't realize. This happened back when I was in college, only 15 months after Columbine.

LINK

It was the first day of school so I wasn't there (naturally), but when it was happening, it was terrifying. Your thoughts first go to your friends and you're praying nobody is dead.

All we knew was "active shooter on campus", then we saw SWAT on the "breaking news" on local stations.

It is terrifying and an awful feeling thinking that "the worst" might actually be happening in a place you hold dear.

I'm ok with it. Keeps him from hurting himself and potentially others.

That is a little different than a guy that doesnt even have a gun. Putting out "active shooter" was wrong.

The authorities knew who the kid was the entire time and were sent to pick him up because he was contemplating suicide. The wrong thing to do was send the entire campus into a frenzy thinking a crazed gunman is going from building to building shooting up people. That's what the MaroonAlerts sounded like and that's why they got the reaction they did. And on top of that, every student with a twitter began suddenly hearing gunshots ( ?) and that further fed the hysteria

Put an entire campus under the impression a gunman is loose, when you're just escorting some kid out of class
