Glad to see Oregon still having their total number of national titles on their helmets.

Is there a hypothetical situation in which you would agree that Oregon could compete in the SEC?
I'm not saying I think they could, I'm just asking if there was ever a situation in which you would think it. Because if that situation does not actually exist threads like this are pretty unnecessary.

Maybe in the Eastern Division...I could see that.

What is your definition of competing in the SEC? Could they win 8-9 games a year with an occasional 10 win season (out of conference games included), sure. But I don't see them being able to be legit SEC championship contenders on a year in/year out basis. Most years they'd probably go 5-3 or 4-4 in the SEC depending on who all they played that year.

This has nothing to do with Bama. Should you have to win your conference to get into the playoff? Or should there be two SEC teams in the playoff? It can't be both.
However, the conferences are not equally balanced, so requiring you to win your conference would penalize teams in strong conference and benefit teams in a weak conference.

Bingo.

Gus is talking about acceptance into a playoff format where you have to win a series of games to be a champion. Like the NFL and every other division of football down to pee wee.
Not really...the NFL play-offs don't have a committee to determine who gets in or left out (the rules are fairly straightforward)...and there are a lot more teams (probably too many) than 4 in the other divisions of football...

Your team got an automatic invite to the title game to replay the team you lost to on your home field. While the other team had to win a championship game to earn the right to play there.
Personally, I think you should have to win your conference to get in...thought so then, think so now...however, under the system that we had at the time, it's hard to argue that Bama wasn't in the top 2 when that selection was made. That being said, if I were an LSU fan, I'd have been pissed having to play Bama again. But in the play-off picture you painted above, having to play a team you already beat in the regular season is more likely (happens a lot in the NFL), so your point is moot...
The BCA/BCS were essentially rules set in place for a 2-team play-off; it wasn't perfect by any stretch but it was better than the pure polling years where the two top teams rarely played one another and the national champion was decided by a vote of the media and coaches...
