A truthful/honest overview of LSU from a reasonable fan

First off, Alabama completely dominated LSU and were much physical in every way. Congrats on the win.
Now regarding LSU. I think a lot of LSU fans do not know what to think of BK. We cannot fire him, and he has shown flashes that he can win here. However, the inconsistency in big games plus the season opener debacle has got a lot of people on edge.
I think it’s just gonna a take awhile and it’s frustrating considering the portal era where we could load up. The defensive staff from ‘20-22 did not recruit and we are seeing the results. Baker can only do so much. The reality is LSU needs to keep stacking classes like they have now.
I think LSU will have success but the reality is it just is going to take longer than expected. Now whether most LSU fans have that patience is another thing.

Reasonable take but Brian Kelly is 63 and has been a HC for decades. He will likely be hitting the HC slide most do by their mid-60s soon.

That’s a fair argument. I do say this though, in recruiting it seems like BK still cares. His speeches and emotions seems like he still cares.
And legitimately I think he really is hungry for a NC. He left a very comfortable Notre Dame situation for this

The sky isn't falling, but we aren't in great shape. The next few years are going to be long.
I hope woodward has learned from his contract mistakes with O and Kelly.

I think Kelly is a very good coach, certainly elite offensively and with regard to QB development.
It’s also important to be honest about just how bad the situation was when O left. That roster outside of the WR room was bottom tier in the SEC, particularly on defense.
BK then made a bad situation temporarily worse with some horrible coaching hires and by letting go of Raymond.
To his credit, he now has a very good group of assistants and the improvement on defense reflects that (70th ranked FEI defense last year to 21 this year). Your offense last year was obviously championship level, this year it’s too pass heavy but still very good (FEI #6).
But your talent outside of WR, OL and QB is still not where it was. That said, with his current and recent recruiting classes you’ll be back to a top 5 roster within a year or two IMO.
But the loss Saturday was very serious. It’s one thing to have fans quit early in the 3Q. And I’ll have to do a rewatch to say for sure, but from where I was sitting it sure looked like a few players stopped trying despite the late TD.
Outside of the O era LSU teams don’t quit. Teams who are just a couple players away from being championship teams don’t flirt with quitting.
I’d argue this UF game is critical. If LSU loses to that QB all the positive momentum he’d been building could turn quickly.

What a relief to a see a civil and understandable discussion between two opposing teams. I agree with a lot of what you said
Majority of LSU fans want results now. People point Kirby and Ed o having success early in year 3, but it’s not the same situation. Kelly inherited a disaster. LSU was a Miss state tier level team. He has steadily progressed the program and the recruiting classes are coming. Yes, it sucks now but like you said in 1-2 more years LSU will have the talent especially on defense that is needed for a NC. We have an elite staff now as well.
If LSU is not in the playoffs by 2026 then I’m all for heating up Kelly’s seat. But until then he needs time and needs the talent to come together.

LSU and Ole Miss are ahead of Alabama for many of reasons. I will start with Ole Miss. They look very good right now at present day. They have the same record and completely owned SC at SC. They barely lost to LSU at the hardest environment in the country.
Alabama has not looked good of late. Losses to Vandy and to Tennessee team who has looked very average at times.
LSU has two very good wins in which they beat Ole Miss and beat a very scrappy SC team at SC. LSU also recently demolished Arkansas. Dominated Texas AM for a half until Texas AM did a complete 180 with their game plan.

Looking through someone’s post history is weird behavior.
I was wrong. Happy?
Alabama is way better than LSU and so is Texas AM and Ole Miss.

Amazing how far the drop to reality. Said it when they hired BK, probably not a very good hire in the longrun.
Simply said, Kelly is Jimbo 2.0. A talking politician that spews nothing but BS and excuses. They are freaking clones.
Scott Woodward gets total credit!
Kelly is a good coach and great recruiter but it ends there. Many SEC coaches are better and that will leave LSU with a constant disadvantage. Go ask ND fans. They were happy when BK was gone.
The game versus Bama tells you everything. I watched a total of 3 plays by Bama and texted my Bama and LSU buddies that blowout was coming. It was so obvious that they are literally clueless on defense and then there is Nussmeier. And his lack of development. Dude cannot see the field whatsoever. No good for Kelly and on him. But he says "lack of execution" just like Jimbo.

You would have been better off losing the 2022 BAMA game.
We crapped the bed and that sent you to Atlanta for a kirb stomping.
The trip to Atlanta raised the expectations for your coach in his first season.

Jimbo can’t identify or develop QBs like BK can.
Jayden Daniels went from a one read mobile QB to the Heisman winner and BK deserves credit for that.
Nuss has many flaws in his field awareness because he tries to force things, but he’s certainly improved and will be drafted pretty high next year.
There isn’t an AD in the country who would take Jimbo over BK which is why Jimbo is unemployed and LSU will probably win 9-10 games again.

The fact that LSU won the West in Kelly's first season and hasn't flirted with that kind of success since kind of belies the whole "Kelly was dealt a shite hand" narrative. The fact is that he is just a pretty good coach who has now moved up to the hardest league filled with the best coaches that college football has to offer and at this level he is merely slightly above average. He doesn't coach the kind of physical ball that it takes to win in the SEC. LSU will usually be good with him at the helm, but they'll never be great.

So after a loss to Bama, it looks like LSU fans have gone from "next year" to a slightly more vague "take longer than expected".

I think mentally its easier to say its the talent than the coach. LSU has never not signed a top 10 recruiting class. Sure some are bust here and there, some leave, and some are quality players.I think giving him a pass and blaming previous coaching staff for leaving them in shambles is an "auburn" thing to do.
When you get hired to do a job...you take that 100 million dollars and you take on all those issues and you fix them. You dont get to blame the previous coaches recruiting 3 years in.
You lose 3 opening game in a row..thats on the coach...he's not getting them ready.
You lose to aggies when the QB change happened and the zone read looked like something you didnt prepare for...coaching issue
You get the brakes beat off by bama at home at night by a running back playing QB. How can you not have figured out how to stop that in 2 weeks..coaching issue

Yep, Kelly just needs more time and your fans might as well settle in because you can afford to fire him.

I think what we have seen is what we will get from BK.
At or near 10 win seasons, every so often a shot at the SECCG/playoff if timing & roster are right. No consistent top 10 rankings. Will be a good but not great program.
Toughest thing to watch is how soft we are. Losses happen, but we are getting mauled in losses every season...

He’s in year 3. Come on, he is what he is. And what he is a coach that will consistently lose about 3.5 games per year. He has 15 years of track record at ND and LSU to show that.
And It’s the portal era. You can get your recruits (high school and portal) in place by year 3.
