DBs and interior linemen have to be fantastic. Without them, see 2013 LSU.

One good thing about Chavis' defenses is that they seem to get better as the year goes on ... Until they inexplicably break down at the worst moment.

Chavis needs great DT and DE play, a great MLB, and a great Secondary. OLBs are almost invisible. If he has that, the defense will be really good.

He does not recruit.

His personal strength is LBs, but they were always our worst unit.

He put out solid, disciplined defenses, but his talent level from 2010-2012 was off the charts. The defense has been solid but not dominating since then, unless we were playing Texas A&M.

Chavis, like most coaches, needs great players. But, he coaches them well when he gets them. You got a good coach for sure.

This is great so far so do y'all mind a follow up question?

How important is depth for Chavis? Sure we need some good DBs or DLs, but does that mean an elite starting lineup will do it or is he like Saban where it is rotation city?

I will hang up in listen.

depth is pretty huge on the DL

we had hardly any depth last season and quentin thomas was hurt most of the year. he will rotate guys in, linebackers shouldnt be too big a problem since he'll switch things up a lot with extra DBs. a hands-on DB coach who can recruit his arse off like a corey raymond helps.

when there is depth he will sub guys in (see 2011/12)

DBs need to be very very good. When he can put them on islands his defense is much much better.

Right, because he puts very little pressure on the QB. Better have awesome defensive backs

I'd say it starts in the trenches for any coach.

The fundamentals of football remain the same. Your offense and defense are made up front in the trenches. Texas A&M must get better up front on defense first and foremost.

Been said before, I'm sure, but his defense is a speed defense. Undersized players who need to be ballhawks and bend until they break. Without a pounding offense to keep them off of the field, the upgrades won't matter.

D-line is critical for him I feel since it was a weak spot for LSU For a few years. He likes smaller speedy/smaller linebackers for field coverage and sacrifices size at defensive end to prevent the runner from getting outside. So if the line can't stop the run, his small backers at the next level get beat up. Even with good DBs, when its 2nd and 3 or 3rd and two, your secondary is even more at a disadvantage because the d cannot dictate a third down. And then of course everyone knows of what happens with third and longs of you get to that point inside the 2 minute time frame. His Ds are usually good with stopping mobile QBs contrary to what another poster previously said....Johnny Football says hello.

Chavis' defense shuts down scrambling QBs easily but if they are a power run QB (Newton, Marshall, Prescott) and don't have the interior DL to disrupt the O-line, it's gonn be a bad time.

Very, VERY important and even more so with A&M's offense.

Chavis rotates a lot, to keep guys fresh and maintain steady pressure. With a high powered offense that scores quickly or inept offense that goes 3 in out, it wears down the monsters up front.

Need monsters on the inside with depth and DB's that can shutdown. He likes lighter linebackers that can East and west, least critical piece IMO.

DB'S have to have the ability to roam, play zone, and shutdown. Even with a good DL, average DB'S and average LBs his system will fail. That's why his scheme needs elite/near elite talent to work.

This is not good for a Chavis defense:

Taylor Hamm @TaylorHamm247
Aggies miss on all three corners today RT @Horns247: Kris Boyd is signing with the Texas #Longhorns ... LINK

Chavis is one of the very best DC's in the business.

Chavis would run the best system for his talent, and get maximum effort. Hes outstanding and a big loss for the Tigers.

Theres no getting around that Chavis is an all time great, whether he adorns P&G or not.

Is that attributable to coaching or talent developing though?

Chavis has leaned entirely on the secondary the past couple of seasons, and fortunately, we have an excellent DB coach who plugs players in.
