Can one of you MS baws tell me why a big name school isn't located in Jackson?
The amount of security needed to keep the campus safe would be cost prohibitive.

Jackson is a shithole

Sankey hopes for a quiet Thanksgiving night.
Basically the only thing this game has going for it this year is the being physical towards each other. It'll be quiet for competition but hopefully not for player conduct.

Yeah but at the time charter institutions were being founded and whatnot you would think Jackson would have one of the main state institutions, no? Was Jackson a shithole/crime ridden in the mid- to late- 1800s?
I get history, just a thought.

Way back in those days, Vicksburg was a much bigger, more happening city because it was on the river. Mississippi State was almost located in Vicksburg.
Thank the good Lord that never happened.

For whatever reason Mississippi decided to put their universities in rural towns of nothing. Which is a similar model to the community college system.and why towns like Fulton and Scooba have community colleges.
I would guess Natchez with as old as it is and Meridian being the railroad crossroads would've been considered for Ole Miss and MSU respectively if they considered actual populated areas.
But obviously Natchez is nothing rn. And Meridian really needed MSU to not turn into a shithole.

Kinda wish we were have put in Vicksburg. Being off of an Interstate and next to Jackson would be much more ideal.
And we could really be the team of Northern Louisiana and Southern Arkansas while getting away from Alabama.

Well, today we split Memphis and Tupelo with Ole Miss and they would own all of that if we were in Vicksburg. Plus, Vicksburg is a dump, although it might have been less of one with MSU in it.
All my humble opinions, though. I like where we are now, although we were disadvantaged for a long time because of it.

My biggest problem with MSU is that we're too close to Ole Miss and Alabama.
And I'd just love to have some territory of our own even if we gave up places like Memphis.
Taking sole possession of Jackson would be nice. And being somewhat Central in the state vertically could've proved to be advantageous. But oh well
Again I have no problem with Starkville. I just hate where we are next to everyone.

In the 1920’s Governor Theodore Bilbo tried to consolidate State, Ole Miss, and USM into one school put it in Jackson, but the state legislature voted it down.

I came here out of habit expecting to get into a nice bit of holiday season trash talking but while the page was loading I realized it was useless because..... well we're both useless at the moment

Nope, but Biloxi (maybe Gulfport?) was slated to be the home of University of Mississippi before Oxford won out in a vote.

It was a town called Mississippi City that was consolidated by Gulfport that was slated to have that university.

If your head coach's IQ was one point higher, he would be a potato.

Actually Meridian was going to be the location but according legendary lore the following happened:
In the mid-1870’s, the College Board was deciding where to locate the new State University. Meridian was going to be selected by a 4-1 vote. Sonny Montgomery’s grandfather was one of CB members and he lived in Starkville. So to keep from being embarrassed, he convinced one of the members to vote with him so the vote would be 3-2 for Meridian. Unbeknownst he actually secretly talked to two of the board members and the vote ended up 3-2 for Starkville.
The story does not end there however. In the early 1900’s, the same Mr. Montgomery dispatched his son to Meridian to operate a failing saw mill he owned. That son and his wife gave birth to baby named GV Montgomery (later known as Sonny) and the rest is history. Starkville obviously got the University which was/is great but in the later 1900’s, Meridian obviously benefited from the influence of Rep. Sonny Montgomery (Key Field and NAS Meridian to name a couple of things) and that is still carrying forward to this day.
