I'm surprised Indiana is that low. I would've guessed they'd be somewhere within that gap between Duke/Kansas and Louisville

It began with Lanny Van Eman in the early 70s. Exciting basketball in that time period but still had losing seasons.

The 78 season is what started many hog fans to begin following basketball.

What amazes me that ND has more Sweet 16 trips than Arkie. Wow.

But just one Final Four and they lost to Arkansas.

It's still a weird timeline where we're defending Cal against the Blue Balls. But I'm here for it.

You realize that Arkansas made a sweet 16 before ND, you fricking dolt.

No they didn’t.

Notre Dame’s first was 1953. They have 3 listed prior to the Razorbacks first trip.

Arkansas first was 1958. The majority of the Hogs trips are post the expansion of the tournament. 8 of ND’s trips are prior to expansion.

You sound a lot like a Dallas Cowboys fan. I'm sure they could create some similar graph about their playoff appearances. But does it really make you feel better inside?

No, Arkansas first trip to the NCAAs was 1941. Y’all had NCAA success before ND…which is amazing they had more trips to the Sweet 16.

NCAA appearances for Arkansas

ND NCAA appearance as not till 1953. So, the argument that ND had a jump start on tournament success is not valid.

ND NCAA tournament appearances

Not worth arguing, because Arkansas has had more success in the NCAAs than ND, that’s obvious.

You probably wouldn't be able to see the Cardinals on that similar NFL playoff graph. Would that make Cowboys fans feel any better about the fact that they haven't won a Super Bowl since you were in diapers?

That analogy was obviously waaaaaayyyyy over your head.

I’ve seen Kentucky win 5 National Championships in my lifetime. Idiot.

A Lot of Sweet 16 Trips

Thanks for linking that Wikipedia page, but I think the part you're missing is that, for example, Kentucky counts a S16 appearance in 1951.

However, in 1951 there were only 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament.

I think that's why most only consider it a relevant metric after it expanded to at least 32 teams (meaning you had to win one game at minimum).

Not to take anything away from Kentucky's overall accomplishments — it's just a bit disingenuous/semantics to word it that particular way.

That is odd, they didn't list 41 and 45 as Sweet Sixteen appearances.

40% of our trips to the NCAA Tournament have resulted in a Sweet 16 appearance. Pretty sad we've only made the tourney 10 times though, and 75% of the Sweet 16s occurred in a three-in-a-row stretch in the early '70s.

The premise of this thread is Sweet 16 appearances. Notre Dame has several before Arkansas had its first.

It is not invalid with the topic of this thread, Sweet Sixteen trips.

It's just semantics - a lot are counting tourny appearances when the field was 16 or fewer, as a sweet 16 appearances. Not saying either way is wrong, but that's the confusion
