According to Leach, giving half the teams O reps to one athlete in the RB position is the OPPOSITE of 'balanced'.

The short pass IS Leach's run game. He short-passes to multiple playmakers and to multiple positions on the field - instead of handing it off to one RB from one position.

Hard to stop. And FAR more 'balanced', IMO.

Depends on how good your quarterback is and how many off days he has.

Well certainly, in modern offenses.

I've seen that. A lot of times, it really is just a long hand-off. What's he running at Miss St ? Is it lateral stuff like flat and bubble screens, or more forward like shovels and slants ?

He's been saying this for years.

Your QB won't stop Leach's offense. Try to keep up in scoring, maybe.

I'm speaking in terms of Leach's quarterback.

Yes he has. And old-school HCs still think 50/50 run/pass is still the ideal mix.

It isn't. It gives lopsided reps to one position.

You guys only have one good RB?

The whole idea is about forcing the defense to defend every blade of grass.

His QBs have held up well over the years.

This is what confused Pelini. He was calling plays like Leach was gonna run it 50% of the time.

It isn't. It gives lopsided reps to one position.

Doesn't make sense to wear out that one "bell cow" back, does it ? But most every coach does. Seems like they'd platoon that stuff more.

You're still handing it to one field position. Instead of peppering it around the field.

Easier to defend, if you always know where the run starts from

Balance is overrated.

Do what you do well. Force the other team to stop it. If you throw 80 times a game, and the other team cant stop it...then it's stupid to run and get nothing from it.

If you run and gain 6-7 a clip, and the other team cant stop it or wont move safeties in the stop it..no need to throw incompletions.

This whole 50-50 concept is fine if you do both well. No point in it if you suck at one or the other. Just like us last year. We kept trying to run, and couldn't do it effectively. It was pointless.

They killed us with short crossing routes. Pelini stuck to tight man coverage and made no adjustments.

I agree with him.

What matters is what part of the field you are attacking.

This was one of the things that drove me crazy when McElwain was the Alabama OC. He always attacked the short side of the field with the pass and run. So many times it would take just attempting a deep ball to keep the defenses honest because it doesn't matter if it's a run or a screen pass to Julio, it's attacking the short side of the field.

Run/Pass ratio is a terrible stat for offensive balance.

Why is he a career .600 coach then?

I guess Leach never figured out the toss sweep.
