This isn’t to knock recruiting rankings, which are clearly pretty accurate, but it’s specifically to address how overhyped “5 stars” are.
All we ever hear about is how Alabama is loaded with 5 stars, when in reality we sign like 3 per year, and usually 1 or 2 don’t pan out.

The real meat of any elite team is 4 star recruits.
Waddle, Ruggs, Devonta Smith, Amari Cooper, Jalen Hurts, etc the list goes on

There’s really not much of a difference between 4 and 5 star recruits, except when you’re talking about an obvious star like a RB, WR, or sometimes QB.

The problem is these recruiting sites weigh 5 star recruits about 90% more than 4 stars when they give their team rankings, which is completely absurd. That’s almost saying that 5 stars are worth 2 4 stars. Ridiculous. Yet, that’s how we arrive at these rankings.

In summation, feel proud of your 4 star recruits. I’m looking at you, Florida. Count them as pretty much the same as 5 stars, and you’ll get more accurate team rankings (with Alabama way out in front)

Pretty sure 247s ranking system is, on the whole, a good snapshot of recruits ability to be drafted highly

That being said, yalls WR 2017 haul will never be duplicated

I do feel like the recruiting services have watered down the impact of a 5th star. It should mean a nearly guaranteed impact starter as a freshman, but that’s definitely not the case any more.

Like I said, I think recruiting rankings are legit. I just think they give way too much weight to 5 star recruits that are really just marginally better than 4 stars - if at all

I thought Tua was a 5 star. Wasn’t he the highest rated qb out of hs? Don’t feel like looking it up...

I think some services had him as 5. 247 had him as 4

Sorry for partying, but we don't cheat anymore. 4 Stars is as good as it gets for us. Maybe someday we can get a coach as personable as Saban.

Recruiting rankings are not near accurate enough to put in real stock into.

Look no further than Bryce Brown and Tyler Love for evidence of this.

There's no doubt a major correlation between consistent good recruiting classes and competing at a high rate. But I've always wondered what exactly the difference is between, say an 88 rated 3*, and a 91 rated 4*. With a good coach, could you not theoretically take a team full of 88 3* (4* begins at 89 on 24/7) and compete with a team full of 92-96 4* consistently? This whole recruiting thing is really more art than science a lot of the time.

I would say players outside the obvious skill positions are also more apt to be "coached up" much higher. So high 3* OL and DL can probably get a lot more mileage with a good talent developer.
