3 Biggest ?'s For Your Defense

What's the three biggest ?'s for your team's defense?
1. Will John Jenkins/Kwame Geathers emergence and DeAngelo Tyson's move to his more natural 3-4 DE position have ripple effect on Alec Ogletree and Christian Robinson at MLB?
Key to UGA's season IMO. If NTs command enough OL attention and Tyson plays even better at DE, i'll take Alec Ogletree 1 on 1 against just about anybody. Christian Robinson is solid and apparently the leader of the D. Even if OL doesn't perform, I think Murray, Charles, King, and Crowell are talented enough to make the offense adequate. If DL is dominant, that's all it'll need to be.
2. Are OLBs ready for Game 1?
Losing the SEC's sack leader in Justin Houston hurts, but there's talent here. Jarvis Jones, provided he's fully eligible, should be a capable replacement, but who else will help rush the QB? Cornelius Washington is a combine freak, but he has yet to produce much and I don't like the thought of him tackling anybody in space. Many figure Ray Drew will take his spot, but is he ready to cover an SEC TE or RB? Terribly thin at this spot, who's next? Chase Vasser? Cross train Richard Samuel? Alec Ogletree?
3. Will the secondary live up to hype?
6 players returning in the secondary started at some point last year. 4 started a substantial amount of the year. A lot of pundits predicting a big year from them, but they disappointed in SEC play last year. The wheel route
. 11th in Pass Eff D, 6th in Pass Yds, 9th in Ints, 12th in Opponent 3rd Down Conversions, etc. And this was with the leading sack man in the conference. A lot of experience here, some talented guys on campus behind them, and at least 3 really talented freshman expected to come in and contribute. Should be interesting.

3) What if Jerry Franklin goes down?
We're as deep on D as we've been in a while...

Thanks, SuperTits. Looks like our 14th NC will only be complete domination and not intergalactical, mind-numbing domination.

Secondary play is the only thing I'm really concerned about heading into the season defensively. Now, if you wanna talk offense, I've a laundry list.

1. Defensive Line
2. Secondary
3. Linebackers

1. Linebackers
Worst linebacking group I've seen at Tennssee.
2. D Tackle
Outside of the 2 starters, will anybody else step up.
3. How much will secondary help front 7?
This is an extremely talented group that should be top 3-4 in the league with the return of Janzen. Return the top 8 from last year and add #1 and #3 JUCO DBs.

1. Depth at LB.
Losing Shack for the season and having to kick Clarence Jackson off the team hurt bad. We are going to be moving a few of our thicker dbs to lb to provide depth...that never makes you feel too good. Granted, we could have a solid first unit with Marry, Kight, and Johnson ( if he is ready to go which I think he will be). It's the depth that worries me.Other young guys like Ralph Williams and Keith Lewis are going to have to play.
2. Experience in the defensive backfield.
We have 2 returning starters from a deplorable secondary. CB Charles Sawyer needs to build on his RS FR year, a year that he took his lumps. Damien Jackson looked great in the spring and has really added some speed and explosivness.
After that, we will be looking for a new SS and someone to play CB opposite Sawyer. JUCO dec signee Wesley Pendleton really impressed in the spring, he was the fastest guy on the team according to some reports. The coaches seemed to be comfortable with him as a starter.
SS seems to be wide-open. Brishen Mathews, Ivan Nicholas (who may move down to LB), and juco transfer Aaron Garbutt are all in the running. Freshmen Nick Brassell, Senquez Golson, and Denzel Nkimdiche will all see time in the defensive backfield as well.
3. The "young" DL.
We have 2 srs starting at DE in Lockett and Dorsey, but our interior DL will be completely new. Jucos Gilbert Pena and Uriah Grant will add immediate help and RS Freshmen Carton Martin and Byron Bennett will see significant action and probably start at some point. The word out of spring was that while we are significantly younger at DL we may be more athletic and dynamic. Corey Gaines and Justin Smith will also see action on the interior DL.

I'd be scared shitless of your DT situation...green DTs in front of green LBs is a recipe for historic levels of disaster.

I was just that going into the spring. Granted, you can only tell so much in spring but this green DL held up fairly well against our pretty strong OL, so it made me feel a lil better.
But you're right, it could be bad if guys dont step up. They will take their lumps regardless but hopefully the light will come on quick for both the jucos and younger ones.
