quote:

As the Aggies' offense stumbled to a near 100th finish in total offense nationally last season, people got tired of seeing Fisher on the sidelines with a variety of laminated play sheets, unable to get play calls in on time, and then yelling at a variety of players as they came off of the field.

In that regard the people are getting what they want and it's a relief to them because it was overwhelmingly perceived as being the primary issue holding the program back.

In addition, this theoretically frees up Fisher to spend more time with other aspects of the program. Again, this is considered to be a win for folks who have watched Fisher bring four straight top ten recruiting classes to Aggieland and want him to be focused on his strengths as opposed to his weaknesses.

However, Petrino's offense is very much like Fisher's in terms of the concepts and plays. They both like to use 11 personnel and get the ball down the field which calls for deeper routes and offensive linemen who can hold their blocks. It's certainly not TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley's way of doing things and it doesn't match up with what Ryan Grubb does at Washington, two candidates for the position that were reportedly offered the job.

quote:

Nonetheless, I wrote in December that Petrino "coached against Fisher, runs a similar offense, has coached quarterbacks, and would call plays (Fisher friendly items). The coordinator, play calling, and quarterback coaching roles would meet the minimum requirements of donors and admin types that want to free Fisher up to be a CEO and not be so involved on the offensive side of the ball."

Fisher himself made the hire, something that A&M head coaches have been allowed to do in the past even when they've been under more duress than Fisher.

And in the end, everyone got something that they wanted out of the hire, even if it took some time to make it happen....but no one got everything they wanted.

Finally got the coordinator hire they needed. Now Jimbo just needs a few more years to get his guys in and they can win the SEC and a playoff title.

You can trust Bobby Petrino to see this through.

Just ask the Falcons, Cardinals, Razorbacks, Running Rebels.....

I'm just waiting to see what Harley-Davidson Lil Bobby pulls up in, and whose on the back.

Petrino is a way better offensive mind than Jimbo could ever dream of being.

I think this is a fair assessment Cap.

From my perspective, if we can get 2 solid years out of Petrino, I’d call this a win.

I like Tarp. He is pretty reasonable with all of his assessments

The hire reminds me of Orgeron hiring Pellini

He was good 10 to 15 years ago. Has he updated his scheme with the times? Is he still that legit?

I don’t think Jimbo (or Bobby’s) schemes are a problem if you have the personnel to run them (A&M does).

The problem for Jimbo Fisher and A&M on Saturdays was him having to call a offensive game while worrying about special teams, clock management, and flip through his 3 ring binder and spiral notebook from the sidelines. Then the rest of the week he has to recruit HS players, keep guys out of portal, recruit guys from portal, come up with an offensive game plan, etc. It’s all just too much.

I think Bobby’s offense will absolutely work if he and Jimbo can get along and mesh. His success will 100% hinge on relationships with the staff and players and not scheme.

I think that’s what every offense tries to do

During the 2018 season, the running game was suspect, and the defense was on its third coordinator in as many seasons.[38] Crawford, who has covered the Cardinals for almost three decades at both WDRB and The Courier-Journal, recalled that the 2018 season, and with it Petrino's tenure, effectively ended when Petrino ripped into his players in the locker room following a close loss to Florida State. According to Crawford, Petrino lost the team at that point; they would not win another game that season.[36]
