I am talking about second in the East and let’s be honest every team in the East’s results would look a lot different over the last 20 years if they played Alabama every year including Georgia. They have been virtually unbeatable. It’s not an excuse. It’s a fact. Add 12-15 or more losses to Florida, Kentucky, and Georgia’s overall SEC records in that timespan and look at the impact. I know Georgia beat Alabama in the CFP but they haven’t had a ton of success against them either and they are infinitely better than any team in the East.

Pruitt was allergic to having an Offense… and left the cupboard bare, to the tune of mid sixties on scholarship after Huepel was able get some transfers. The team we saw last year was thrown together, piecemeal, while learning a completely different system after being gutted to the level of a G5 roster.

I mean, I get that. But the one area Pruitt knows is defense, and thta was the glaring weakness. Maybe y'all just needed a yearr of adjustment? I don't know.

The offense is electric, though. If the defense can improve I could see Tennessee at #2. But, I didn't see where y'all brought in much defense in last recruiting class....but...I am not sure if you brought in some defense through the portal.

You defense will determine how high you fly this coming season.

I get it. Y'all are behind the 8 ball with Alabama being your big rival game. I just thought it odd that you told the other poster that one year didn't make a trend, when it was Tennessee that had the one off year of finishing higher.

State is too low on almost all of these. Don't they have a lot of returning starters including qb? They will upset at least one team and probably more than that.

It's all about how we finished the last two games, the inconsistencies with Rogers and the terrible bowl game performance. Personnel wise we're in better shape than 1 or 2 others in the west.

19 guys on D in the last two classes including portal. And the 23 class has 7 of 12 guys on D. Because of the style of play on O they will never field a top tier D but the don’t need to yet. If they can build a little depth at LB and in the secondary they can win the toss up games. Defensive depth (65ish scholarships last year) cost them the Pitt and Ole Miss games. The difference between 7 wins and 9, given everything going against them was a couple DBs and LBs being healthy and fresh.

They were able to add 30 guys to the roster this year but are still a couple short of 85. If not for super SRs and a free transfer last year the Vols would have been a walk on team.

Also, don’t even say anything about Haslewood. He’s not even a top 15-20 SEC receiver either.

Agree, that guy is a total frickin bust. Huge diva. Cares more about Instagram then football.

Don’t get me wrong we have had a lot of issues but when you are debating the tallest midget contest, one generally permanent loss plays a huge factor in that

Like I said, I can't speak to the portal, or the quality of player you got out of the portal. However, looking at your classes...
2022: Of your top 10 recruits only three were on defense. One of those was the #330 player in the country.
You did bring in 3 transfers, but all were 3* players. ETA Saw at the bottom of recruit page where they listed transfers .

2021:Of the top 10 recruits I only see 2 listed for defense. (I do see a couple of athletes but can't find them anywhere on the depth chart for Tennessee.) Of the two defensive players recruited one is #420 in the nation.
BUT...I do see where 6 transfers came in defensively. Of the transfers, all were 3* except one and he was a 4*.

This is true. Teams that run a more Hurry up offense do tend to struggle on defense,...at least statistically.

Ouch. That definitely hurts. Pruitt did not do UT any favors. ETA I should add the transfer portal seemed to have hit you hard, too.

Like I said. You have an exciting team to watch and a scary one to play. I am not intending to dog your team out....just being honest about what I see. I do think a team can win with a high powered offense, but also still believe you have to have a serviceable defense. It will be interesting to watch Tennessee and see what happens the next couple of years.

It does. Having Alabama as a permanent opponent definitely hurts you guys. And don't misunderstand me. Alabama would definitely be a load for anybody.
