Poor thing. Sophomore Derek Stingley is much better than Junior Surtain.

DeVonta Smith disagrees.

I would be shocked and ecstatic if Trey Hill is a 2nd team all american.

I would be equally shocked if cade Mays is also a 2nd teamer.

I don't follow enough other teams to know who should be in their place. The biggest argument for both players is their number of starts entering the season (Mays was often the 6th man with starts all along the line. Again... he wasn't regularly one of the 5 starters).
The argument against is actual film where they struggled. They are very, very good. But 2nd team all American is a leap imo based upon 2019.

The biggest snub for UGA is NT Jordan Davis.
The avg rush with and without Davis clogging the middle is insane.

Started 11 games in 2019 but wasn’t regularly one of the 5 starters.

We were down to our third string LG, third string C (cade mays), and third string RG. For the first time in a couple of years, we had both tackles injured/out at the same time as well.

If you don't understand what "starting 5" and 6th man means, just ask. Trust me. I know the Dawgs better than you just like I trust that you know Tennessee better than me.

I know that starting 11 out of 14 games would be considered a consistent starter but maybe I just don’t understand MATH

How many games did he start at RG?
That was his natural position and he didnt start over Ben Cleveland at that spot when we were healthy.

Mays versatility is his biggest strength. Not being a guard, tackle, or center.

When your biggest strength is versatility (trust me... there is huge value to a team to have this. And it will be missed in 2020), should you really be considered for 2nd team all american when you split starts at your natural position?

11 out of 14, or 79%.

Moses will do really well, need to see him in coverage also...........Surtain has been and still is very overrated........he got burnt more last year than a steak on a grill at a beer party around midnight.

When?

quote:

In his 28 career games, just twice has Surtain allowed more than 60 yards in coverage.

quote:

Surtain has been one of the better deep-ball defenders over the last couple of years, as he ranks fifth in PFF coverage grade on 20-plus yard targets and has allowed just five of 24 targets to be caught while forcing eight incompletions.

quote:

In total, he’s allowed a mere 0.69 yards per coverage snap over his career. That’s pretty solid for an underclassman. At 6-foot-2, 203 pounds, it’s near impossible to beat Surtain on contested targets. He’s forced 34 such targets, allowing just nine to be caught with 18 forced incompletions.

Lol

I give Cade a ton of credit. He stepped in at center and did well. There are very few linemen in college football who could play every single position on the line (he even took a few snaps as an HBack) in their first 2 seasons of SEC football.

But those snaps at C were as the third option. Snaps at Tackle were the 2nd option. Snaps at LG were the 3rd option.

Hell... even snaps at RG (his position) were split very evenly with Ben Cleveland before attrition took its toll and forced Mays to try and save us all along the line.

Kudos for his versatility aside... Mays was the worst lineman during the bowl game (maybe his head was already out the door). There was a significant drop at LT when he came in. And he wasn't even good enough to lock down the RG starting job.

I wish he was still on the team. We don't have anyone as reliable as Cade as a 6th man. Jamaree Salyer is the closest to that and there is a strong likelihood that Salyer starts at tackle for us (guard being Salyers natural position but we have guards aplenty)
