I was around back then and remembered exactly what happened.

That's what bowls did back then. They ALL tried to get best teams/matchups possible and always extended early invites

Why in the world would the Sugar Bowl not try to get Pitt or FSU to play if they were higher ranked?

BTW how old were you in '80

So no source?

Have some pity, if this guy was around for the last UGA ship, then senility has to be setting in.

Didn’t Jan Kemp expose 5 players who had test taken for them do they could pass a class and play in the Sugar Bowl ?

No.

" She began teaching at her alma mater in 1978. In 1981 Kemp was one of the teachers who complained claiming that Georgia officials had intervened allowing nine college football players to pass a remedial English course, allowing them to play against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship in 1981.".... Another LSU posted an account but here's ANOTHER '81 Sugar Bowl

quote:

The Sugar Bowl in its zeal to have Notre Dame jumped the gun on the pairing that season. Whereas bowl selections for 'at-large' teams was all over the boards back then, two weeks after Notre Dame had been tied by a Georgia Tech team that would finish 1-9-1 and Alabama had lost to Mississippi State for the first time since 1957, the Sugar decided to invite the Notre Dame-Alabama winner to play the Bulldogs

This is the schedule UGA won a national championship with in 1980:

The one BYU won it with is way more embarrassing.

No doubt. I am old and I remember back in those days the unwritten rule was that you didn't drop in the polls unless you lost. BYU opened the season against Pitt that was pre-season ranked in the top 5 and BYU won a close game. This win put BYU in the top 20. Thing is that Pitt ended up sucking and losing 6 or 7 games that year. But the poll inertia kept BYU ranked and everyone ahead of them lost at least one game. BYU won the NC by beating a 6-5 Michigan team in the Fiesta Bowl.

From the Sugar Bowl website:

How Georgia and Notre Dame Met in the 1981 Sugar Bowl

quote:

The feeling in New Orleans was that either the Irish or ‘Bama, who had lost to Mississippi State, would be far more attractive against Georgia than either Florida State or the winner of the Penn State-Pittsburgh game. Since Notre Dame and Alabama played late in the season, the Sugar wanted to tie up the victor

quote:

Two hours later, Notre Dame (which dropped to sixth after the Tech tie) awaited Coach Dan Devine in Legion Field’s dressing room chanting, “Sugar Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Sugar Bowl!” Irish arms were held aloft as the bodies continually swayed, elated about a 7-0 victory over Alabama.

Seems like the Irish knew where they were headed.

2nd time I posted the Sugar Bowl link and the 3rd time referencing what happened.

Since you were born LONG AFTER this happened (I'm making this assumption since you were too much of a pussy to answer) You obviously have no concept on how screwed up and curropt the big bowls were especially when Bear was around. They continually stabbed each other in the back with backroom deals a payoffs.Find your own link.

The Sugar Bowl jumped the gun again the next year when they extended an invite to #1 ranked Pitt before they were killed by Penn State the last reg season game. Once again, find your own link.

It's pathetic that Dawg fans are still living off that joke of a national title team.

What pathetic is that a Floriduh fan is still triggered by it.

They will never get over it. All their talk of 1980 says all anyone needs to know. They are so transparent. Just can’t handle the fact that their day in the sun is long over and a new Dawg is assuming his rightful place in the scheme of things once again.
Woof!!!

Tennessee: 5-6

...and Georgia only beat them by one point.

Everyone knows about Herschel Walker running over Bill Bates for a touchdown...but the game was actually decided by another play. Bill Bates muffed a punt...neither team could recover it before it went through the end zone for a safety. UT's lead was cut to 15-2.

Tennessee would fumble on the Georgia 4 yard line on the last drive of the game to ice it for Georgia. A fieldgoal would have been a chip shot for Alan Duncan...who still holds the UT record for most field goals in a game (5). Georgia wound up winning 16-15.

So, not only was Georgia's schedule soft...they were super close to losing their opener to a horrible UT team.
