That 10-10 tie between MSU and ND was one of the most boring contests ever staged.

Even as an LSU fan I enjoyed that book. Good read.

Alabama was better than Texas in 1966 and Alabama is better than Texas in 2021.

In 1966..

Alabama beat Ole Miss 17-7
Texas beat Ole Miss 19-0

Advantage Texas.

Only when you apply how teams prepare for bowl games in the present day to how they prepared for bowl games in the mid-60s. It's not the same because bowl games did not mean the same.

Spin it however you want. In 1964 Alabama lost to Texas. Arkansas beat Texas and was truly undefeated.

That’s just an excuse used to claim bogus titles.

Alabama didn't win it 64.

We both went undefeated in the regular season. Arkansas won their bowl game. Alabama lost to Texas who Arkansas had already beat during the season.

Breaking News: Bowl games did not count in 64.

And Alabama got screwed by the refs in the game and really did win it anyway.

There's absolutely no need for me to spin it. Alabama was your consensus national champion for 1964. Arkansas finished #2.

The only one who has to spin it is Arkansas fans. Alabama has the trophies.

Besides, the only reason Alabama lost that game to Texas is because of the refs. Not to mention Namath didn't even play in most of the 1st half of the game.

At least there were major stakes involved.

AU vs State 3-2 has to be the worst game ever played. Outside of being mostly meaningless, the recap follows:

quote:

- Crowd of 52,911
- the Tigers and Bulldogs combined to average 3.4 yards per play
- AU out-gained MSU by 199 yards but fumbled three times, losing all three.
- AU QB Chris Todd and MSU QB Wesley Carroll combined to go 24-for-51 for 232 yards with an INT and three sacks.
- 8 x three-and-outs, 3 x missed field goals (Auburn’s Wes Byrum missed a 22-yarder), and 3 x turnovers on downs
- MSU didn’t have the ball in AU territory until the third quarter (only happened due to recovered Todd fumble. And, they advanced the ball 11 yards and missed a FG after the break.
-MSU finally got on the board after an AU holding penalty in the end zone gave State a 4th qtr 2 pts off a safety
- After the free kick, MSU turned the ball over almost immediatelywith 9 yds on 4 plays
- State got the ball back with 2:29 left and one last chance to win the game; Carroll threw a pick immediately
- then AU ran out the clock while the fans slept

You can say 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, and 1941 are bogus titles all you want (and a legitimate argument can be made for their "bogusness"), but Alabama won the 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020 national titles based on the standards of the time. There is nothing bogus about them.

The AP and UPI trophies Alabama has in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility from that year disagree with you. I know Alabama lost its bowl game to Texas, but bowl games were not treated as part of the season for the longest time. Teams that won the national championship before losing their bowl game prior to 1964 include: 1950 Oklahoma, 1951 Tennessee, 1953 Maryland, and 1960 Minnesota.

And teams like Notre Dame who outright refused to play in bowls.
