So I’m sure someone has a good explanation for this..

1964 Alabama wins NC (10-1)

1965 Alabama wins NC (9-1-1)

1966 Preseason Rankings
#1 - Alabama
#2 - Michigan State
#6 - Notre Dame

Final Rankings
#1 Notre Dame 9-0-1 (National Champs)
#2 Michigan State 9-0-1 (National Champs)
#3 Alabama 11-0

Alabama 281 Opponents 44

How does Alabama, the 2 time defending champs, go 11-0 the next year and not win the NC?

Our state's policies on integration had much to do with it.

Literally just George Wallace and integration policy blowback.

Turns out politics have always been in sports.

Yep, and Coach Bryant said he thought it was his best team.

They got together with the NCAA and chose the '41 title instead...go figure.

These same politics didn’t exist in 1964 and 1965? I was just shocked to see that.. I can’t imagine that has happened many other times, especially to a blue blood like Alabama who already had 8 NC in 1966.

It was a culmination of public opinion turning against folks like George Wallace, Bull Connor, etc. The sentiment was against recognizing Alabama’s all-white squad because it would be seen as validating white supremacy.

It sucks for those young men and coaches because they were just playing the hand they were dealt. They didn’t have control over whether they were integrated or not. They were just playing football.

Alabama didn't win it 64.

We both went undefeated in the regular season. Arkansas won their bowl game. Alabama lost to Texas who Arkansas had already beat during the season.

Alabama shouldn’t have won in 1964, much like Texas shouldn’t have won in 1970.. but both schools claim those NC.

Interesting that both major selectors under the criteria of the time and their associated NC trophies indicate otherwise

The AP and UPI trophies Alabama has in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility from that year disagree with you. I know Alabama lost its bowl game to Texas, but bowl games were not treated as part of the season for the longest time. Teams that won the national championship before losing their bowl game prior to 1964 include: 1950 Oklahoma, 1951 Tennessee, 1953 Maryland, and 1960 Minnesota.
