The US has a generic definition of the South and not only is Texas considered a southern state but so is Oklahoma. I understand why some people challenge what states are actually in the south, but I cannot think of a single reason to omit Texas. Oklahoma and Missouri are harder to justify as the South but they have more in common with the deep south than the midwest.

Having grown up in MS and then lived in Texas for a decade, my experience is that you can’t lump Texas in as one thing. East of I-45 is as southern as it gets down to skillet cornbread. The further west you get from I-45, this less like the south the state gets.
Texas is mostly just Texas really.
