I will never forget the first girl I dated in college. I was in the prime of my "good guy" life, and I treated her with respect and dignity, and even went so far as to buy her a nice dress and jewelry that she loved. Needless to say I really liked this girl and was determined to treat her right. And then she broke it off a month later because "there was no spark." I have never since treated a girl half as well (including my wife) and all my relationships have lasted much longer.

This girl did find me a few years after we dated and apologized to me. Apparently, one of the bad boys she had hooked up with had been abusive to her. Play with fire..

There are some that are nice, and you can generally tell who they are in one glance. But, most are whores at heart.

Assertive dudes that know what they want are generally seen as bad guys. What do you want to do in high school and college? Bang chicks. Act on it, and you're a "bad guy."
Nice guys are looking for someone to hook up with because they've seen Love Actually and Notting Hill a few too many times and they think that's what women want, so they model themselves around it.
As with anything in life, assertiveness will get you what you want because, in general, people in the world want to be led. Courtship is no different. Women of that age certainly don't want to be worshiped, hell, many of the women in the world at that age have such low self esteem being worshiped scares them.
Just be assertive, know what you want, don't be a dick or a bad guy, and the whole good/bad guy thing disappears.

You haven't figured this out yet? It's because the "bad boys" have confidence in themselves and aren't boring. It's not at all a surprise that girls go for them when you consider that confidence in men is the most important personality trait a man can have by a large margin.
