My ancestors fought both sides. Personally I would have joined those Mohawks and dumped tea in the harbor.

Essentially.

Greater determinant would likely have been which of the colonies I was in, though.

Instead you are ruled by millions of your fellow citizens who believe they rule over other people by divine right. I'll take the monarchy.

ITT: People who say America get upvoted and people who say Britain get downvoted.

I probably would have been a Loyalist, although to keep from being killed I would probably have had to say I wasn't. One of my ancestors was killed for being a Loyalist.

Then you would have been fine being a British subject back then because the King was quite a bit less powerful then Parliament.

Uhh, no. I wouldn't have.

In my world symbols have meaning. The crown is a symbol of a class of people who believe they are born better than everyone else around them, and because of their God given birth, they are more wise, more clever, and just better fit to rule over others.

The amount of power the crown wields matters little to me. It is the very fact that they exist in the first place that rubs me wrong. Down to the very fiber of my soul.

And I feel the exact same way about our current "elite" class running this country today.

Now I'm not a violent sort of person, so I'm essentially harmless except with my words, but I am by nature a separatist.

I would've played both sides and absconded with all the money.

The simpler question to ask is this:

Would you sooner be Canada or the US?

I’m happy in the good ole USA

I'd rather live in the US because I don't really like the cold weather, but I don't care which country I'm a citizen of.

I'd be on the patron side of the bar at Tun Tavern having a drink and enlisting in my beloved Corps.

The first Marine enlisted in a tavern. After making his mark he asked "Where do I get my musket?" to which the clerk replied that he had to bring his own - the Marine then began his long walk home to retrieve his weapon.

While he was away a second Marine finished signing his enlistment papers and when told he must provide his own musket replied that he didn't own one. The tavern master offered his own musket to the second Marine and reached behind the bar to retrieve it. As he handed over the firearm to the new Marine the first Marine returned, covered in sweat from his journey. Upon seeing this the first Marine told the second, "In the old Corps we had to bring our own Musket."...and the first Marine Corps tradition was born.

We were kicked out of every good country in Europe but pick up a rifle for USA and you got free land as payment if you survived.

Of course we fought the bloody English then got out free land and made liquor.

100% loyalist. Obviously with hindsight things turned out pretty good the way it worked out

I took a history of South Carolina class with Dr. Walter Edgar who was also a consultant on Mel Gibson's The Patriot and he brought the question up and made a very convincing case for loyalism. The Professor of Military Science at USC also emphatically argued that he would have been a Loyalist - I do not mean this as an appeal to authority or to regale you with college tales...just to say why it interests me and the first time I really thought about it.

When I took the first part of US History at Alabama part of the class was a 1 hour small group meeting each week with one of the GTAs for the class. One of the weeks we were divided into three groups: Patriots, Loyalists, and Undecided. We got like 15 minutes to make our case and at the end the undecided group voted on whether to declare independence or not. I think he said we were his 12th small group he taught as a GTA, and the first group that had voted against declaring independence.

I feel like I was one of the most vocal Loyalist in the group, and I think we made really good points. When I think back to it, it's very similar to what I think still goes on today. You had a bunch of wealthy and educated people that were convincing poorer and less educated people to do things (fight in a war) against their best interests to make the rich richer.

I’ve had many discussions on this and the Vietnam war. It’s easy to say you’d be a patriot but when push comes to shove who knows.
