When Was America Greatest? (The Upshot; NYT)
Surveys of Republican and Democratic voters show that there's wide disagreement about when America's best years were/are.
Basically, Republicans think America was at its best when segregation was the norm, LGBT rights were an oxymoron, there was no separation of church and state, and we had just won/finished our second world war in three decades.
Democrats, on the other hand, tend to favor recent years where improvements in social justice, human rights, and technology have been most pronounced.
Do you think America's best days are behind it or ahead of it?

Ahead.
And there will never be anywhere near a consensus on this in any decent cross-section of the American population, of course

ahead of it?
America will continue to improve and morons will always say that we are on the brink of destruction because of some politician.

In Aggieland, the former students are usually referred to as "Old Army," and the current/future enrollees as "New Army."
TAMU opened in 1876. Let's just say the lament, "New Army is going to hell!" has been a common refrain since 1877

Behind. Europe and the US are dying empires. Poor immigration policies are degrading both.

When I was alive and experienced it. I can't speak for generations before me, nor for the generations that come after I expire.

Between 1954-1964. No other time period compares, it's not even close, and I loved the 80s.
Behind it. Seriously, how could anyone think great days are ahead with the Millenials in control. We just have to except this harsh reality and deal with it.

Behind . America is so sensitive that you have to watch literally everything you say that has to do with race, gender, age, sexuality.. Etc.

The 60's: great music, free love, awesome drugs.

Great has turned into a relative term... Now that I think about it, the term always has been relative...
IMO THE 80's and the 90's were the best decades.. America was prosperous, we had great movies, great music. People weren't so damned sensitive and we didn't have to worry about being so PC...
Maybe this upcoming generation feels that now is the greatest point in American history... These days being a cross dresser and mutilating your genitals for the sake of how you feel, is no longer a mental issue and is normal... The words commen sense have now been replaced with intolerance and bigotry...
I'm all for fairness and equality but IMO what's happening these days isn't social progress and dangerous lines are being crossed.. I shudder to think what we will consider to be normal acceptable behaviors 20 years from now..

Behind, but not because of social progress or world wars. America has maybe 100 years left before it becomes insolvent.

I don't think there's any way you can look at the current state of things in the West and come to any other conclusion than it is in decline.
The U.S. rose and peaked post WWII, mainly because it had bombed the hell out of its other global competition.
Relative to the rest of the world, we are definitely not at our peak, and we are headed south. Like Mississippi dirty south.
