You can choose the criteria, whether you’re biased based on it’s the places lived, politics, natural beauty, vibes, whatever you want, what’s your top 5?
Mine in no order (I’m also not telling you my criteria, but these are my favorite all around for different reasons):
Colorado
Florida
California
Hawaii
Utah
Bring on the downvotes for my subjective post. It won’t change my mind.

I've never been to Hawaii or Alaska, but if I had, I'm sure they would be on this list.

Out of the 40 I have visited this is my list.

New Mexico
Arizona
Nevada... Las Vegas helps Nevada squeak in.
All of the other states are tied for 6th

I'll first give an honorable mention to places that aren't states. Most of Eastern Canada is gorgeous, the people are fantastic, and if you stay away from poutine the food is good.
Washington, DC. A lot of folks hate it but once you figure out how to get around town its great. The only time you should drive your car is to the grocery store or from your house to a Metro station.
The states, in no particular order.
Virginia. Good climate, economy is stable, lovely scenery.
Wisconsin. Great food and friendly people. Liked it much better than Illinois.
Arkansas. The good parts are among the best in the country, the bad parts are among the worst.
North Carolina. Basically Virginia Part 2.
Alabama. The Gulf Coast nudges it ahead of Missouri for 5th place.
Dishonorable mention to California (hated it), Florida (liked it until I lived there. Never again.), and New York (most of the state is meh, but I loathed NYC with the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns).

Tennessee
West Virginia (it's such a departure from Northern VA, it's shocking.)
TX (I can find a way to get away from whatever kind of a-hole you are, somewhere.)
AL (the lakes in the north are sweet)
No judgement on FL, since the different regions are as different as the sections of TX are, but it might be #5 based on almost nothing. Barely gets an honorable mention due to how they number Interstate exits. Oh, exit 17? That's two hours away, FU!

Florida
Tennessee
Idaho
Those are the only states I would live in these days.
Not sure on the other 2 as far as visiting. California can be nice if you are in the rich areas and feel like wasting a bunch of money. Colorado was nice the last time I was up there, except for roaming herds of bums in Denver.
But I'm most likely to visit Alabama since I have a good bit of family there. The company you are with is way more important than the location.

Totally underrated state...especially the panhandle. Love me some Coeur D'Alene.

If only the Arkansas Delta counties weren't so bad, people could visit the area.
A lot of history that is continued to be ruined by crime, poverty and corruption.

Wouldn't want to live in the last 2 on a dare but they are fantastic places to spend a week or three at a time. Montanna would be 6th by just a hair....
