What food do you/did you eat as a poor college kid to save your money for drinking etc?

When I was at Auburn it was Mac and Cheese. Kraft Mac and Cheese was 25 cents a box!

My brother at UGA survived on campbell soup. He was there when REM was a local band in the 80's.

My son lived on Ramen noodles. :)

Our house bought a lot of 10 for 10 Jacks pizza.

Can't believe I ate that stuff.

Spoiled though. Weekday training tables and free meal points that could be used at Panera, Chipotle, Einstein, and a burger place.

Early 70's, Troy State, breakfast for many mornings was walk across street to Zippy Mart, little pack of Lil Deb type chocolate covered donuts with small carton of whole milk. Other days would be the white sugar powdered donuts with chocolate milk. Many daytime snacks at same Zippy Mart would be can of Jalepena Bean Dip, bag of Fritos for dipping, and can of Coke. Needless to say I put on the bad pounds before wising up few years later.

I was married my senior year. I remember my wife and I made 19 dollars last two weeks one time. We learned to eat red beans and rice as refugee food. Fortunately wifey can cook.

I also did the sell blood for cash deal once or twice. Went straight to the grocery and bought generic beer. The things you'll do at 21 years old to catch a buzz...

What we know about food now, and how it builds human beings and effects everything about our body -- it is our body.

I wonder if anyone has connected that to weakened and more diseased generations that were birthed by these first generations of people who ate highly processed fake food on a regular basis.

I think this generation knows a helluva lot more about health and fitness than previous generations ever did. Thank God most people dont smoke now. US FDA needs to do more to eliminate certain things like high fructose corn syrup from food as additives. shite thats illegal in Europe and Canada we regularly consume.

I hear that from people who lived through those days.

But it's just hard for me to accept. I mean, like how was it not obvious it wasn't healthy? What was your body telling you? How did you feel? It didn't even look right.

Idk. I think there's something larger in play.

It's remarkable how much we've consciously evolved or rediscovered 'taste'. Beer, wine, food. Clothing. We're getting back to men wanting things like 'heritage boots'. Seems like there's a lot better independent movies and music nowadays.

The internet has to have a lot to do with this.

People were total products of the 8 channels on tv.

Think there's a huge and layered report that could be made on the phenomenon of this taste and health evolution.

I found ways to eat well and still save in college.

For instance, instead of Ribeyes I bought Chuckeyes. Yeah they were tougher, need to be marinated or tenderized, but 4 for less than $10? Easy choice. I'd buy whole chickens or Cornish hens and eat on those for a few days then make soup with the leftovers.

I'd cut up fruit and either freeze it or store it in the fridge. I'd buy at local farmer's markets, I had an indoor herb garden on the wall of my apartment, ect.

I always loved the breakfast chops personally.

ALL THAT said my go to survival was cans of tuna and picante sauce

Smoking wasnt a social stigma and was heavily advertised on TV, Radio and in print. Your parents likely smoked as did your grandparents at least at one point in their lives.

Even the military encouraged smoking. The concept of "smoke em if ya got em" played into it. Smokers got smoke breaks. Those who didnt smoke kept working. Coffee and a cigarette was an acceptable meal substitute for a lot of people.

Hell I remember in 1988 my company had a small office in a building with a Japanese bank. Landlord wanted to take the building non smoking, but couldnt yet becuase it wasnt the law. So they had a vote. Smokers won. Largely due to the Jap bank and our little 5 person office who all smoked!

I'm not really sure what the point of that post was.

Like were you informing me of that?

Anyway.. the comment you responded to wasn't really wasn't focusing on smoking. It was mostly referring to food. How anyone thought that stuff wasn't healthy doesn't make sense to me.
