Jackson Mississippi.
For a State Capitol, it's infrastructure is pure shite. The roads are the worst I've seen (worst than Birmingham) and panhandlers essentially make pumping gas a sport.
Good food though.

I once interned at Alabama Power in Demopolis, AL and while that city sucked, it exposed me to how most of West Alabama is a black hole of terrible
The terrible places seemingly never ended:
Selma
Uniontown
Greensboro
Linden
Just all awful. Greene and Hale counties are third world.

I have a cousin that lives in Millry, AL. The drive south from Livingston is exactly how you described. West AL is horrible.

Kingman, Arizona.
I had a transmission blow on my Jeep in the middle of nowhere. Kingman was the nearest town for miles, so I had it towed there. Spent a week in the dead arse middle of summer waiting for my transmission to be fixed in a shite town, in a shite hotel without a vehicle. Also, one night when I was dead asleep some drunk idiot ran off the road and smashed into the pole suppling the power to the hotel. It caught on fire and knocked out all the power, so I had to flee in the middle of the night with a fire going on and find another hotel. It was the worst traveling experience I’ve had.

Charleston, WV. So glad my parents moved us out of that shithole when I was 3.

Acapulco in 1994. Nasty, Volkswagen beetles everywhere and the restaurant I ate at had only 1 cut of each style steak on the menu. Thank God the Navy paid for the trip.
