shite. I didn't even know he was sick. He was the nicest guy I ever got an autograph from as a kid.

Might.

Damn, I hate reading this. He was a great player, always seemed to be a good person, was well liked by everyone.

RIP Tony ...

Wow. That article is really good. I never really got to see him play (he retired when I was 5), but I feel as if I did after reading that. He was a great coach at SDS.

Time to go make my dad quit dipping.

Great human being in addition to be being one of the best hitters of all time. He will be sorely missed. God Bless.

Great ball player and a great all around guy. It sucks that he died at his age but he was a great role model for athletes every where.

In 323 at bats against Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux, Tony Gwynn struck out a total of 3 times.

I don't think I would get 3 hits in 323 at bats.

ESPN's Jayson Stark threw out one of the craziest stats I've ever heard.

quote:

what does it mean to have piled up a .338 batting average over a 20-year career, over 9,288 at-bats? It means Tony Gwynn would have had to go 0-for-his-next-1,183 to get his average to fall under .300 (and even then, it would have "plummeted" to a mere .29997).

RIP Tony

One of the greatest hitters to play the game ever. Class act too and none of his success went to his head either. We need more athletes like him today.

This news absolutely sucks. One of the greatest pure hitters of all time. Completely class act as well and fantastic representative of the game he played and the community in which he lived.

Legit role model in an era when those were hard to find.
