Am I missing something here? So 59 million Americans caught the Swine Flu in 2009 with over 12,000 dying. I don't recall the cancellation of major events and or the panic that is beginning to occur. A couple of hundred have Coronavirus in the U.S. currently, with the few deaths being mostly elderly patients and those with health issues. There is talk about having no fans at March Madness games and major music events have already been cancelled. Why is there such a drastic difference than the Pandemic of 2009? Social Media? Media blowing this out of proportion? or is there something about Coronavirus that warrants this type of response?

Afraid of the unknown. The corona is no big deal when it is in your head but once it moves deep into the lungs it becomes a pneumonia and can turn in to sepsis. That is how it kills.

Being a virus, we just don't know how to treat it yet.

Nope, you’re asking a valid question. People just like to make things bigger than they really are sometimes.

Donald Trump claimed to have the biggest inaugural crowd ever when he didn't and tends to exaggerate pretty much every single thing he does

He also told people who were sick it'd be ok to go to work.

But go on, blame this on the liberals.

ETA - before anyone starts, both sides suck and I'm on neither.

It's not like we didn't have social media and sensational journalism in 2009. Something is different about the perception of this one, and I'm not sure exactly what's caused it. It seems to be in humanity's nature to be reactive rather than proactive, so it's odd to see these measures being taken.

You have the press that wants the economy to tank between now and November. They couldnt put a dent on the Right with Russia and Impeachment , this is their last best chance. I listened to Trump talk about people who have it (didn’t know they had it) go to work and then watched the press and the Dems say that Trump suggested they go to work if you get it. I have watched facebook turn up the heat trying to make the economy tank also.

It’s a legit question.
I read an article yesterday (LA Times) that explained the situation as follows:
quote:

No vaccines, no medications

Humanity has been contending with seasonal flu for centuries, so scientists have had a long time to study the influenza strains that circulate in the winter months.

quote:

But the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 has been in existence for only about three months, so there is no natural immunity in the population.

And unfortunately, there isn’t a vaccine that can pick up the slack. Although several experimental vaccines are in the works, none will be ready to roll out for at least 18 months, said Dr. Hilary Marston, a policy advisor at the National Institutes of Health.

Nor are there any medications specifically designed to target this coronavirus, though researchers are testing existing antiviral medications to see if they can help patients with COVID-19.

quote:

Still learning how it spreads

For public health officials, another cause for concern is the lack of information about how easily the coronavirus spreads.

Scientists know that influenza is transmitted from person to person by droplets that leave a sick person’s mouth when they cough, sneeze or talk. Those droplets can travel three to six feet and infect anyone in their path.

quote:

And researchers are still trying to determine how long the new virus can live on surfaces like handrails, doorknobs and elevator buttons that may be touched by hundreds or even thousands of people each day.

It isn’t yet clear whether the coronavirus spreads as easily as the flu, but it has moved quickly. It has reached six continents in a matter of weeks with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 89 countries and territories. Some of those patients became infected despite having no contact with anyone known to be exposed to the virus.

quote:

Higher fatality rate than seasonal flu

And here’s another reason health officials are sounding the alarm: It appears that COVID-19 has a higher fatality rate than the flu.

Although four out of five cases of COVID-19 result in mild illness, the director-general of the World Health Organization said this week that the mortality rate of COVID-19 could be as high as 3.4%.

That would be higher than the mortality rate of the 1918 Spanish flu, which is estimated to have killed at least 50 million people worldwide over two years. Among those who were infected, the death rate was around 2.5%.

Take it for what it’s worth.

I'd like to point out bama has nothing to do with this... but also it's a secret REC plot to stick it to the 68 teams who do qualify.

Is it really that hard to understand the fear of it if you consider multiple variables?

It’s a relatively unknown strain of the Coronavirus, so there is no vaccination to lessen its severity (like the flu) and we don’t know it’s potential for mutation. While younger people seem to be basically carriers of mild cases, it does have a higher mortality rate with older adults that have comorbid conditions. And something like 60% of Americans have pre-existing health conditions that can exasperate the virus. You also have to consider our hospitals are typically at max capacity during flu season, so we really don’t have the infrastructure to handle a full on pandemic if it comes to that.

The call for closing events, schools, etc. literally has scientific basis in how they were able to slow the Spanish Flu here in 1918.

Do I think people need to be raiding TP at every Costco in 100 mile radius? No. But it’s not unhealthy to have concern. Or for organizations to have a plan in place if they need to limit contact.
