Just left talking points, they have moved swiftly as anyone could except. The President, regardless of party, has to calm fears as if he doesn't, things will get far worse quickly ie. Bank runs, hoarding, stock market crash etc....

The President has to keep the country informed responsibly.

Trump has not done that.

His administration (including Pence) is trying to handle this as best as they can, but all Trump has done is incite conspiracy theories because the opposing party tried to use his administration's initial screw ups against Trump.

I was one. Damn dorms at universities. It sucked, but unless you’re old or compromised, you’re just really sick for a week. It’s different from 2009 because back then, idiots didn’t have AS much of a voice online.

A couple of hundred have Coronavirus in the U.S. currently, with the few deaths being mostly elderly patients and those with health issues

The thing is we don't really know how many cases we are dealing with because we've only just started large scale testing of people with symptoms. Until a few days ago we were only testing people who had been to foreign countries or had come into contact with someone that had.

It could be spread quite extensively by this point. We thought we could stop it at the borders and that didn't work.

Is it going to be the end of the world? No. But it is a fairly serious health threat and I imagine quite a few folks on here screaming that its a "lubard" (what a great typo that was) hoax would change their tune if they or a family member caught it. As general rule of thumb a virus does not believe in a particular political viewpoint. I know some folks, on both sides, are popping boners over being able to scream accusations but that is just the ancient primate tendency to holler and throw poo at their opponents.

If it is well and truly in the wild, so to speak, then we might lose a few thousand people to it. It will also kick the economy right in the balls whether the media fans the flames or not.

So not the end of the world but even if you don't get it than its going to be a real pain in the arse.

Oh yeah, that storm that killed almost 2,000 Americans. Remember when President Dubya downplayed that, too? It took a week for the Louisiana Governor to let him to get near New Orleans.

The Press is always pushing a political agenda. They do it during hurricanes too.

Mother nature is a massive bitch and doesn't care about politics though.

Politics are no excuse for us to behave like dumbasses and refuse to take action to stop a pandemic that will cause emotional suffering and have dire economic consequences.

The fact that cruises were given free reign until recently is moronic.

The fact that we didn't do better at screening people coming from affected areas was a disaster.

The fact that we refused to use the WHO testing method while we got ours at the door was just baffling.

At this point none of these failures matter, we need to be focused on getting ahead of the outbreak and preparing and executing our mitigation plan - no matter the politics involved.

No, but you pretty much turned it into the al.com or redstate.com comment section very quickly.

Am I missing something here? So 59 million Americans caught the Swine Flu in 2009 with over 12,000 dying.

Why is there such a drastic difference than the Pandemic of 2009?

quote:

I don't recall the cancellation of major events and or the panic that is beginning to occur.

First cases in the US weren't detected until mid-April 2009 (after the NCAA Tournament). So they wouldn't have cancelled it. BTW...many conferences were asked to cancel events in 2009, and they refused. LINK

The first cases were actually in Mexico, so it didn't take as long to get to the US as this one. Also...the WHO didn't declare the H1N1 pandemic over until August 2010. So you are talking about 13,000 deaths over 17 months. The first US case was reported on February 28th, and so far there have been 27 US deaths (in less than 2 weeks). So...17 months from now, our perspective on this may be a little different.

They are saying that they are applying what they learned from the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic event to prevent this from being a similar event.

Since the symptoms are initially more mild, it is more likely for people to be contagious and asymptomatic.
H1N1 had an R0 factor around 1.4-1.6, while the COVID-19 has an R0 factor of 2.2. That means that it is more easily spread than H1N1.

So...you are less likely to know you have it in early stages, and it is more easily spread than H1N1. In high income countries, the in-hospital mortality rate of H1N1 was determined to be between 1-3%. It is yet to be determined what the corresponding mortality rate of COVID-19 will be among high income countries. Overall, the COVID-19 mortality rate looks to be somewhere around 2% (but these are still early numbers, and should be more accurate as data collection increases).

Remember, there were production delays in the H1N1 vaccine as well...so it didn't get distributed until late October. They look to have more aggressive early development of vaccines for COVID-19.

Conservative approaches to contain this could actually prevent it from becoming the next "deadly pandemic" spread throughout the US, and people will be able to sit back and talk about how everyone overreacted because the numbers were lower than they were a decade ago.
