2. Mississippi
3. Georgia
4. Tennessee
5. South Carolina
6. Kentucky
7. Lousiana (French roots drop it down the list)
8. Arkansas
9. Texas
10. Missouri (lots of rednecks here)
11. Florida (sorry, but this is the retirement home for the north... more northerners here than southerners)

Texas was most definitely the south until some clever marketers drummed up some obscure “Go West”, cowboy cattletown history in the early 1900’s. Good article a few years back in Texas Monthly about how and why. East Texas is still part of the south until it all starts to blend together about Dallas or so.

quote:

The same went for the entire state of Texas east of what is now Interstate 35, which was where the vast majority of the people lived and was every much a part of the King Cotton economy as Alabama or Mississippi. Counties were named in honor of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, John C. Calhoun, Stonewall Jackson, and John Bell Hood. Most towns of any size sported a prominent monument to its Confederate dead, and up until the early twentieth century, Dallasites and Houstonians saw themselves as just as Southern as Memphians or New Orleanians.

It’s just a different part of the south like southern Virginia is different from the Delta.

The top three are Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama.

How do you rank them?

yeah, no

I defy you to find any definition of Southern that puts Georgia below Louisiana

Georgia, and Atlanta, are the stereotype Southern state/city.

True story- the Dukes of Hazzard tv show was based on some movie that came out a year or two earlier, and in the movie it was set in generic Southern areas (I think Mississippi, and Tennessee is also mentioned). It's specified in Georgia for the show, I think to make it more univerally appealing.

GA is a third Atl, Atlanta is not southern

Have you ever been? I live here, its not southern

The northern mountains in GA dont even really embrace southern culture entirely. I will say Columbus to Macon and down are for sure southern though

That's a difficult task.

Louisiana is especially tough, because the Cajun areas are really just a culture of their own... Western Louisiana (Shreveport) is more like East Texas. Then you have towns like Monroe which are as Southern as you get.

Florida also is tough. The panhandle is really Southern Alabama. Jacksonville is a big Southern City. Then you start going South and the further you go the less Southern it becomes.

To me, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas combine to be the true South..... you can add in portions of several other bordering states:

Southwest Virginia is Southern... the rest of VA is not.
Northern Louisiana is Southern... the Cajun regions are not really.
East Texas is Southern... the rest of TX is not really
Southen Missouri (Ozarks) are Southern... the rest is not.
Southern Oklahoma is Southern... Tulsa is a toss-up... the rest of the Oklahoma is not really.
Southern Indiana is Southern... Indianapolis and north are more northern
The Panhandle of Florida is Southern. Orlando and South are not.

What are you using as Southern definition? Rural? Serious question.

It's been awhile since I've been to Atlanta, sure.
I've got family in New York and Ohio, and I can tell you this- from a Non-Southerner POV, Atlanta IS the South, like Boston is New England.
And I'm certain someone from Maine or New Hampshire might argue that, just as you're arguing Atlanta isn't "South".

If you're going by " redneck" status then Georgia is #1. If you're going by Southern traditions then South Carolina is in the top 3. If you're going by education level then Mississippi is #1.

Rural has nothing to do with it. I’m talking southern culture. Atlanta is the capital of the south but not southern as far as culture. It’s sterile in those regards.

Look at the main cities or capitals in each of those states. ATL is less southern than the others on my list.

I lived in Ohio for 18 years and in NYC for several plus have family settled in both. Comparatively for sure ATL is the south, but not so in comparison to any of the premier cities of the respective states of the SEC

Not in the slightest comparatively to the others. Savanah, Macon, Columbus, Augusta are 10xs more southern than ATL. But GA as a state is far more Atlanta than the other four combined.
