It basically comes down to this: regardless of your stance towards the police in general, if you're not doing anything illegal to begin with, and not doing anything to escalate the encounter, the overwhelming majority of the time, you're not going to have any problems.

Step afoul of those criteria, and usually it won't end well for you.

I think we've reached a synthesis with this conversation.

I mean, I know a lot of people hate when school gets involved but really -- we need to start telling people their rights around high school, maybe in the last year.

It's important in America because our laws are outlined so well, and there are many ways to circumvent or protect yourself. I can't fathom why we don't teach our kids how to handle kinetic moments.

Although I've always been of the idea: He has the gun, the badge and the control, I get out of this situation 100% of the time if I just comply and have my day in court if he does end up arresting me.

Seriously, if someone else has a gun -- listen to them, unless they're cartels but I think that problem may be exclusive to me.

See, I'd think this would be common sense. And apparently I'd be mistaken

This problem has been solved by the Common Sense Firm of SDAR/Tbird. What's next?

I know this is in jest but, I used to think principles were a pretty big deal -- and they are.

But when I read the quotation by Rommel that goes: "Mortal danger is an effective antidote for fixed ideas", it kind of changed my whole perception on everything.

Principles are great, but very few of them should be worth your life.

But I keep it thug as shite up in this MF.

I like living more than I like making a point.

No, my supposition is that using race as a primary predictor of criminal behavior while ignoring socioeconomic status (which is a much better predictor) is disingenuous.

Oh I agree with this, however sometimes the reality of any situation is not as important as the perception. The perception is black people commit crimes, not poor people, and until this changes the disparity in arrest will continue.

I agree, and that fallacious perception is a very real problem.

The real misperception is this. As a white man I am 5 times more likely to be killed by another white male as any other demographic. Yet the media and society seem to claim other wise. The same holds true for every racial demoraphic yet we fear others and hang with our own by choice.

Having a good attorney has nothing to do with whether or not one is arrested.

My last time to get pulled over was a few months ago, doing 59 in a 40. Knew I was busted as soon as I topped a hill and in the median, there he sat. Asked me if I knew why I was pulled over. Simply said, yes sir, I was going too fast. Asked why, and was honest and said I had just left a friends house and was jamming to some tunes and my foot went with the beat. He ran my license, tag.. came back with a warning and on my way I went

I need to use that one next time.

Socioeconomic status is almost always a more cogent indicator of criminal behavior than race.

This is true but why was crime not so rampant amongst the poor say 50-60 yrs ago when compared to 2014? my guess is most families had a two parent household with a father that would put a knot on your head.

Stats and whatnot. If you are only 5 times more likely to be killed by whites, what is the whit percentage of populace? Do the math.

ETA- why is black on black crime approaching 90%. ?

The answer is simple: The worst areas of town are usually policed harder because it's believed that's where the bad things are happening. Cops aren't riding around the fancy neighborhoods looking for embezzlers and guys in suits who like to do a little blow every now and then and slap their wife around.
