Smart. You don't have to pay for oil changes that way.

I guess it's all about location and your selling point, but really...how much $ can a panhandler expect to make a day?
$20-$30?
If you have 10-20% of the people actually give you $, but a clear majority ignore you, and then again most probably only give loose change or dollars...how much could they reasonably expect?
I did see one of the best signs/selling points recently in downtown CLT. A guy was dressed in a tie and sport coat, but he wasn't clean shaven and clothes looked a little rough. His sign read, "Out of work, but I'm tying/interviewing. Please help." I was more inclined to give that guy $ than a "career bum," who just sticks his hand out asking for change.

I'm a kind hearted liberal who would do whatever I possible to help someone. But panhandling has gotten insane. Around Denver, nearly every highway exit ramp has someone begging, even in the suburbs.

I read a story where they make just enough money to rent a hotel room. They get a free place to sleep and don't pay taxes.

You don't sound liberal.
Anyway, there was a panhandler in Lexington that got exposed on the news, he was in a wheelchair, but was faking it for sympathy. He was getting over $300 a day some days.

300 per day
=
1,500 per week on a 5 day week
=
75,000 per year (on a 50 week year)
5 day work week so you have weekends free
2 weeks vacation if you just panhandle 50 weeks a year
Tax free income all in cash
I remember back in the 70's some guy from central or south america panhandled NYC 6 months a year and used the loot to buy rental property in his home country. Became quite wealthy.

Really wish Denver would pull a NOLA and buy them one way tickets to elsewhere. Like CC said, it's even bad in the burbs. Just about every single day I'll see somebody standing off or 25 or 36 in thorton/Westminster/Broomfield, a solid 30 min drive from the heart of downtown into the urban sprawl.

There was dateline or 20/20 story years ago about a panhandler who made in excess of $200k/yr from begging for money in time square and Central Park. It was one of those undercover bits where they followed the guy and saw him get in a Mercedes and drive to a luxury apartment building after his "work" was done. If he has no shame and can make that money from begging, then more power to him, I guess.

And the guy in a suit, who you were more inclined to give your money is probably pulling in 50-60k per year tax free.
Only people I will give anything to are those with dogs and they don't get money. Usually a gallon or two of water and dog food.

I literally ran into this yesterday. I saw a guy at the store buy a handle of vodka, a pack of camels, and blunt wraps. The fricker stood outside after he loaded his shite into a friend's car and beg passerbys for money saying he didn't have enough to feed his kids with. I stopped a lady from giving him $20 and he got in my face over it.

Sounds awesome!
Until after the first day when you made $13.50 instead of $300 and now the rest of your year is already off track.

Can't possibly be true. Everyone is doing better than they were before Obama got elected. I heard the POTUS say it himself.

I too am a "kind hearted liberal". Nashville has a program now where the homeless sell newspapers. These papers are geared around the homeless (legislation, non profits etc) and these are now the only folks I "give" to because I then buy a paper.
There's a homeless couple near my house that have been on the same corner for at least a year now. They take turns. It's quite obvious they are addicted to drugs. They both are barely 100 lbs, soaking wet.
I feel bad for them, as I remember when my mother was an addict, and she's told me so many stories about the fiend hitting her like a marathon runner needing a glass of water.
Some people can't be reached though, and it takes hitting rock bottom. I do wonder if the guy has mental health issues, as he seems a little more off than her.
Anyways, just venting. I see them everyday and it makes kinda sad for them and their family. I've been that family member staring at the ceiling praying they are alright.

I saw this yesterday. A guy got dropped off in a van full of people. Walked up to the large shopping center and set up shop on the sidewalk with a gas can and a sign.

No one should ever give money to someone on the street. It legitimizes the practice of panhandling. If people give them money to do nothing, they will continue to do nothing. I will give someone food. I will give someone water. I will walk into a restaurant with someone and buy them a meal. I will not give them money. I will scold people close to me for giving someone money. It's destructive. It doesn't help people. It teaches them to continue to be lazy.
In Dallas there is an intersection I drive by on the way home. Every day the same man and women are there. They are always wearing different clothes. She holds a piece of plastic against her neck and a sign that says "cancer patient". I don't believe that for one second. They are con artists. People still give them money though. I know they aren't homeless. They are always wearing different clothes. They don't appear to be lacking in hygiene. It's disgusting people do this with their time. They honestly would rather sit around all day and be pathetic parasites then contribute to society and get a real job.

My favorite is the guy with a van full of kids who doesn't have gas money, needs to get home, and can't you help? I fell for this the first couple of times and it seems to happen 1 out of 2 times I stop across the river for booze. Now I just offer them free food at the adjacent Subway. And strangely they aren't interested. I feel sorry for those kids, but short of murdering the parents I dunno what anybody can do.
