I am looking to rent until we're married. That will be at least a year.

Everyone's responses have been very helpful. I never ventured much north of hoover in my teenage years so I don't know what's out there.
And I'm sure I went to school or played sports with some of you fellas. I appreciate all of the feedback guys!

Look at the Forest Park neighborhood . Beautiful area. Used to live on 42nd St.

Unless you have school-aged children, I'd definitely look closer to downtown rather than away from it

Yep, live in the Highland Park/Forest Park area until you've lived here a while and have kids. Then decide which boring, whitebread suburb to settle for schools.

Nope. Send em to Altamont for $20K per year.

between altamont, JCIB if youre on the irondale side, JCCHS, and a few other lower level schools are definitely available options if you want to stay downtownish

I don't understand the rational behind doing it that way. Give away a year of mortgage payments and tax deductions. Having to move twice. Moving is already and PITA enough NFW I would plan on doing that twice in a year.

I want to put a sizeable down payment on a home, around 15-20%, and I'm still saving for that.
I will be using either my VA benefits or a RD loan. I'm looking at 25-40k to put down on a home.

We sent my youngest to Altamont for a summer school class. He liked it a lot and my wife and I loved it. We tried talking him into staying, but he didn't wanna leave his public school friends. Idiot.

if your parents still live in Helena - mine do as well, then you should know it absolutely blows. stay hoover or north, esp. if you have kids. look into crestline/crestwood area and also parts of bluff park are highly affordable and closer to civilization without a damn railroad track in your way
It depends on what you're looking for I guess. I live in Helena and am happy with it. I can be in Hoover/Little Mexico in 10 minutes and I can be in Birmingham in 20. Helena is just the right distance from "civilization" in my opinion. You're right about the railroad tracks though.

Hmmmm. I'm confused here.
Seems like parents could/would/should make the final call on something like this.

I'll add for sake of Flanders family planning considerations, the JCIB- Jefferson county international baccalaureate school- is an EXCELLENT public school. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a kid who can qualify.

Graduated from JCIB 2006. We were the #1 public highscool in America that year. Its the best school in the state public or private.

At 8 or 9, yes. At 16, no.

Birmingham catches hell on here from some people, but it's really improving. It seems like the city is making strides in spite of the city council.

That is because it is. It is only a matter of time til the city council starts to reflect all the progress that the city has made in the last 10 years by its citizens.
