How redneck ties in with Southern-ness or not, I leave to you cultural scientists here.

Redneck is a term originally used for farmers. That could apply to South or Midwest.

I'll grant SE Missouri cousin f'er points. Those folks could feel comfortable in a MS or AL trailer park with ease.

Columbia? Scan the crowd at a football game. Hoodies. Everywhere.

Verdict: yankee.

But I had no idea growing up that RC Cola and Moon pies were a southern thing. It wasn't until I met people from further north who didn't have these things.

Interestingly enough...

Coke and RC both originated in Georgia
Pepsi originated in North Carolina

Then you have the predominant drinking of Sweet Tea in the Southeast...

The Southeast...rotting children's teeth for over a century...

Not one to tell others what to do, but I'm not proud that Georgia seceeded from the U.S. and joined the C.S.A.

Don't get me wrong, I'm damn proud to be a southerner, but I'm proud of our superior food, music, athletics, etc. not proud of the war.

In that regard Missouri was far closer to being part of the Confederacy than was, say, Kentucky, whose government very openly and willingly elected not to join.

Jefferson Davis was born in Kentucky and a Transylvania grad. DWI.

I'm CoMo born and raised, don't got no hoodies. I'm so hood, but don't got no hoodies.

Look, my best buddy in law school was from near Starkville MS so I know full well there are major cultural differences starting with blatant difference in accent and all the way down. To pretend otherwise would be bullshite. The funny part though for me is the "verdict: yankee" stuff. Cuz if you asked any true Yankee (and I mean this, not just the Northeast, but ask someone from a place as close to us as Illinois or kansas or Nebraska) what Missouri is and they will say we are Southern hillbilly all the way. Like clockwork.

Again I say, the truth is this: NOBODY knows what Missouri is, but it's provocative. It gets the people going!

This. Completely.

I moved down to Biloxi during HS, and constantly I would be referred to as a Yankee. By the same token, I went up to NY for grad school, and people instantly call me southern because of my "accent" and the fact that I use ma'am and sir. I constantly get people asking me what's the most authentic southern restaurant around

Agreed.

There's a whole lot of "country" folk in Missouri. I won't try to tell anyone that we're Southern. Although I'd suggest anything below I-44 is more Southern than it's not.

Updated verdict: No identity.

To those of the South: Yankee.

IDK why, but these threads make me giggle like Anderson Cooper failing on the Ridiculist.

Why Tennessee and Kentucky are the true border between North and South. The only two states with both White Castle and Krystal...

Show-Me Gump is Southern. Yankee invasion has affected us all.

Everybody needs to lay off the Ruffians.

Wasn't sure if the Waffle House map had been shown on any other Mizzou/Yankee threads yet...this almost makes me not hate Ohio. Props if your state has triple digit WH.

We grew up with a Krystals in my home town. Today it has been replaced by a white castle. And I think its only reason for being known prior to its construction is because of Harold and Kumar.

"Harold huh? A good Anglo-Saxon name."

We'd get to 100 in Texas if Waffle House would open up a College Station location.
