Kids skipping the first month of school: is this a problem in your city?

Every year in Memphis, there is a significant portion of children who do not enroll into school until after Labor Day. As best as I can tell, it stems from their parents being defiant because they didn't have to go back to school until after Labor Day when they were kids.
Is this a problem anywhere else in the country?
P.S.
This phenomenon for some reason seems to strike in the highest of melanin content schools.

I always missed the 1st week of school when they moved the start date up, my family always spent the week before labor day at the lake with a bunch of other close friends and their families.

A week is still not good but at least understandable.
I'm talking about missing an entire month.

Good for them. School starts too early. Kids barely have a summer vacation

Some of ours will start a week or so late and only come in after a truancy officer goes to their home and forces them.
We have a bigger issue of students not coming back after testing with two weeks of school left.

Schools should go almost year round in my opinion... As an adult, very few jobs give you an extended summer vacation so going to school more helps with the adjustment into the working world... Then you add in the fact that public schools function as free daycare for parents and it's a no brainer.

Do yall ever venture into the city on the weekends or are you and your wife settled into your suburb bubble ? You need to come up here often now cause once you have kids you won't get to anymore.

frick that, you don't need to be preparing for your work schedule when you're in junior high. Maybe in college you could do this but many kids in college do summer school or work in the summer anyways.

They have more built in days off though. And I would say 7-8 weeks off is plenty.

I'd normally miss the first few days. Beach trips etc....

I don't have a problem with this. My 13 year old has had football practice twice a week all summer and they start back to school August 14. He's bummed because he doesn't feel like he had a summer vacation. It should be pushed back until after Labor day.

I'm not sure it's anything other than parents who don't care.
Labor Day is hard to miss. So they know that school is starting or has started when Labor Day rolls around.
The stories I'm sure any educator could share on uninvolved and disinterested parents are amazing. My wife was doing home visits of students who had been absent for long periods of time. When the parents were told how many consecutive days their child had missed school, the most common reply was simply, "Has it been that long?"

Who wants to be off in January and February. Kids need time off in the summer to just live. There is more to life than school. Kids barely have time to breath in the summer before they are right back in school.
8 weeks of summer vacation is not enough

Do they not get in trouble for being out too many days of the year? In Georgia, you get 10 days in the who year

I have never heard of this happening in America. Memphis, yes.

Totally agree. Along with this, I would like to see the amount of homework cut back, particularly in late Elementary and Middle School. It's ridiculous to me that my kid comes home with 3 hours of homework in the 7th grade on more nights than not.

You mean copying out of the book work?
I despise the vast majority of "homework"
