You realize that becomes a global war of epic proportions including inside the United States?

An army of Jesus Christ which bears his Holy Cross cannot be beaten! If it comes to a day where anyone thinks it can be then there must be war!

GOD WILLS IT!

The majority of Americans are pacifists now. The eroding of strong patriotic values by liberalism has been the downfall of a once great nation.

Why do you think the nation used to be greater than it is now?

'm not the biggest bill mahar fan on earth, but he nailed this issue to the letter

This is not a war we are involved in. This is a Sunni v. Shi'ite war that we need to back the frick away from, and let them have, just like you let shite burn in the forest from time to time so that it does whatever the frick it does to the ecosystem

All we are doing by intervening is giving them both a common enemy when the real enemy is each other. I'd back the frick away from all of it and let them take care of themselves, then when they are done deal with whoever is left

What in the blue frick does liberalism have to do with pacifism (which, by the way, you are conflating with non-interventionism)

America is terribly weak on the world stage with Obama in the White house. We have become a laughing stock to the world.

Yes but he didn't start the downward spiral.

Try reading a book for once. We were a laughing stock at several other times throughout our history. To say that we used to be a great nation but we aren't anymore shows a complete lack of knowledge of the history of this country.

Who cares about that? There is a reason no country since WW2 has used a nuke in battle. The idea of a nuclear deterrent is so 1980s it hurts. Iran isn't going to nuke Isreal, just the idea is nuts.

But Iran MIGHT have the influence to push the international communities in directions that can force the hand of Isreal on settlement issues, or minimize their influence in the region. They can hoard all the hard power they want, the stuff is almost useless in 2015 unless you are the US. Hell Germany is the most powerful European country and they don't even own an aircraft carrier.

The name of the game is soft power and economic power, and right now Isreal gets more money from the US than anybody. Their threat is that going away because they can't accept the reality that a secular world will push them into a two state solution. They need to see the writing on the wall. No country is an island.

I never said anything about Iran nuking Israel. My implication was just the opposite. Should Israel ever face a real threat to its existence, you can rest assured they will use every weapon at their disposal.

As far as the rest, I always think it is cute when someone thinks that 'soft power' has somehow become the most important asset. This so-called 'soft power' only works until someone decides to cross the threshold and use real power and once that happens you damned well better be able to match that threat.

Someone mentioned China upthread to support the 'soft power' theory. In fact, they're the best possible example of a nation that understands all the 'soft power' in the world is really meaningless when faced with actual physical force. Right now, they're embarking on a rapid expansion and modernization of their military to transform it from a defensive force to one capable of global power projection. They've put a legitimate aircraft carrier in service and have 4 more under construction.

They get it. They understand that being able to muck with finances and goods is useful and at times can be reasonably effective but to truly get things done, you must be able to go anywhere, anytime, and threaten people where they live.

Obviously you're going to need some degree of defensive capabilities. A strong navy to keep international trade humming along. An army and air force to depend the homeland and important strategic points abroad.

The point isn't that we don't (or China) doesn't need a military or physical defense. It's that going halfway across the world with bombs and guns to change people's minds is a fool's errand. The Middle East changes through getting nice shite and having something they don't want to lose.

Not wanting to engage militarily in a region of the world where all of our military interventions buy us power vacuums that are filled with enemies worse than the previous =/= we should dismantle our military and just use soft power to rule. There's a lot of conflating not wanting to intervene with pacifism.

I'm not supporting the 'holy war' nonsense. I'm merely addressing the notion that things like behind the scenes economic moves and 'international pressure' win out over brute military force. They will - up to the point one side decides to cross the threshold from virtual confrontation to a physical one. At that point, you'd better pray your side is best at killing people and breaking things because that's all that matters.

Soft power is what will change the "hearts and minds" in places like the middle east. It won't be fast. It won't be violence free, but it takes the people deciding enough is enough. If you plan to beat them into submission, you're also planning to stay a very long time.

To the point, I don't think your position and carboard's are mutually exclusive.

My personal opinion is that we're already in a global war with islam. And islam is losing.

The issue is the Internet. When we were separated by oceans and time and distance were great, it was easy to live in isolation and have an insular society.

Now, with modern communication and the net, you can get pron right in your Bedouin tent or Afghan hovel along with beer and Coca Cola commercials. Modern communication along with the pervasive English language is invading and undermining islamic culture. I believe thats what the whole fundamentalist revolt against the west, and America in general is all about.

This isnt just an Islamic thing. The same thing is happening even in France. The french mandate french versions of web sites in France to preserve the French language, which is eroding. Why? English is the language of business.

You want to undermine islam? just keep pumping Snoop dogg and Beebs over the air waves. Millenials in the 3rd world like that shite too.

Actually, I was in Dubai recently and noted that you cannot get pron on the internet... and Dubai is very modern.

The government highly regulates what you can and cannot get to unless you know how. Still the point remains that western culture will win this so called war. However as someone else pointed to earlier, it might take the rest of this century.
