There is a reason folks south of Ohio call it the Ohio Ocean, not the Ohio River.

deep south is a pejorative mostly used by Democrats to call republicans racist.

Any non-coastal Florida county could be Deep South. It's redneck as hell.

What a stupid comment- everyone knows Democrats call Republicans racist no matter what.
Deep South is as much a cultural region as it is geographical. Anything low-lying with predominantly Anglo-American and Black residents is solid Deep South.

Another comment- "Deep South" should satisfy these stipulations:
1. Predominantly Black and White Americans
2. Low lying elevation
3. Low income and mostly rural
So I would define it as these areas
- SE Arkansas
- All of Mississippi
- SW Tennessee, including Memphis
- The MS Delta region of Louisiana (including New Orleans). Anything west of that has more in common with Texas and is not culturally Deep South
- Central and South Alabama
- South of I-20 in Georgia (excluding Atlanta metro area)
- North Florida
- All of SC except for the far NW part of the state
- Far SE North Carolina
Deep South cities would be Memphis, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Wilmington, Jackson MS and Montgomery. I do not consider Birmingham Deep South because it is in the App foothills.

I was laughed at for ordering “sweet” tea at a restaurant in Louisville. Was brought iced tea with sugar packets on the side.

I find this suspect.
KY has been the center of Bourbon since America was founded.
Real historic "sweet tea" was actually bourbon in the genteel south where proper souther ladies were not supposed to drink in public. To compensate they would order "sweet tea" which was code for "get me a bourbon".
Even today, a mint julep "correctly made" has sugar and bourbon and n o hint of anything tea related.

I don't think I've ever heard of a mint julep with anything tea related in it

I am curious as to whether folks would consider NW Arkansas Southwest (Fort Smith is Southwest and it is just down the road) or Midwest. Particularly in the last 25 years or so it has developed more of a Midwest feel to it than Southern or Southwestern.
It is a weird little area culturally speaking with so many out of state residents mixing with the mountain folk population.

Move the transition zone up to middle center of PA. The middle of the state is just like the south, just with a different accent. There are a surprising number of confederate flags. It’s certainly Trump country.

Poor blacks who vote Democrat are still the Deep South. Northern Suburbs are a different issue.

I would consider it the "Upland South" or "Upper South," just like these places:
Far southern Missouri
Whole state of Kentucky
Central or "Middle" Tennessee and East Tennessee
Western N.C.
West Virginia and Western Virginia
NE Alabama
North Georgia
Far NW S.C.

Just because a place share political ties with another doesn't make them the same. Pennsylvania can in no way be southern. Their accents, culture and history are totally different. Pretty much the whole country now is progressives in cities and conservatives in the country no matter what state you're in. Confederate flags can be found everywhere. It's a white pride symbol.

Looking at the menu I mumbled something about expecting more being from the south... you're south of the Mason Dixon was the waitresses quick reply. So I asked how she liked her okra. After everyone's puzzled look.... it's either boiled or fried... and quickly ordered the slaw, beans, and mash potatoes.
"what's a grit?"..
(turnips n'cornbread would have been asking too much)

Not a damn thing southern in Southern Illinois. I grew up on the KY side of the Ohio River and the culture changes when you cross it.
It is not a east coast yankee culture. It is a Midwest farm culture... oh golly jeeees!
