That's one of my favorite birds. I saw some the other day.

In the distance, it will sing you to sleep. Overhead, it will drive you to throw rocks.

Did it sound too blue to fly?

I have been hearing the lonely whippoorwill song for a few weeks now.
Also, I saw 1 single solitary firefly 3 nights ago. Not only was it odd to see a firefly at all, but to only see 1!?! I even waited around for several minutes to see if it lit up again or maybe there were others?
Nothing.
I'm telling myself it's the last firefly on Earth and he's very sad because he's lonely, and I've named him Pancho.
Every night I walk around and look for him, haven't seen him again so I fear he died, or maybe he he's off chasing female firefly arse somewhere else. Either way, Godspeed Pancho.

Are you sure it wasn't a Chuck Will's Widow?
They sound very similar and most folks don't know the difference.

Tonight I saw 3 (THREE!) fireflies in such close succession that they must have been 3 distinct fireflies. PANCHO HAS A CHANCE! (Unless they're all dudes, then I guess not)

That's fascinating! I think I have a Chuck-will's widow, not a whippoorwill. I'll have to do some recordings and comparisons and maybe try to put eyes on the bird I'm hearing. It's mostly active with the singing at night, so it'll be tough.

Have had them at our place for about a month. I introduced my daughter to them a couple of weeks ago. She was fascinated.
They are mean little bastards. I worked at a private school in Atlanta for a couple of years and there was one nesting on the front lawn...that little bastard chased those rich folks around like they was field hands.
