I think I want to stay with charcoal or brickets but want to know what everyone feels is the best or most versatile grill?

Weber would be your best choice overall. But, you could also look at a BGE if you want to smoke meats. I have the one from Sams that is the BGE knockoff and it works great. Cost me about 1/4 of the egg.

I use a $20 walmart special and it makes awesome food. In the end, it's more about the person doing the grilling than the grill.

But you may need or want more than a $20 grill. My kids are grown, so it's just my wife and I. The grill surface is plenty big enough for when we want to grill. If you have a larger family, then you'll need to think about a bigger grill.

And do you just want it for grilling? I have 2 smokers, so my grill is specifically for that purpose. If you want to smoke stuff, you'll want something more complicated. I'm not a fan of using charcoal for those type of things, so I have the smokers.

In the end they all work the same. So get the cheapest that suits your needs IMO. Hell even those little walmart specials last me for years, no cover or anything. And then if they start to rust out, don't give a crap because it's only a $20 grill. Hell, my tongs and spatula's cost more than it does.

Then take the extra money and get a smoker. Offset if you want best flavor, but pellet smokers are good for ribs on busy days.

My friend just got the master built gravity loader. All the cheat codes and easy ness of a pellet smoker, while still using charcoal

I mostly grill but would like the option to smoke so have been leaning BGE or similar. Just can’t decide if it’s worth the money or if I should grab a used one off Facebook.

If it were me, I would get the Weber 26” to start and maybe a Slow-N-Sear. Then if I found I wanted to smoke more I would get the Weber Smokey Mountain - 18” or 22” depending on what I need size wise. Or even an offset wood-burner if you really want to smoke things properly.

Green Eggs don’t require enough airflow to truly be a good smoker.

Presently I have a Weber Summit Charcoal/Weber Kamado and I do love it, but if I had to do it over again, I would do the above.

You really can't beat a Weber kettle if you want charcoal.

I got a Weber Genesis II propane burner last year and have been happy with it.

I would say a 22" Weber with a SNS is a great place to start, a 26" if it fits your budget and space. The cheap square charcoal grills don't just don't give you as much even heat distribution or extinguish flare ups as quickly.

I'll admit I'm biased since I've been cooking & smoking on 22" Webers for 40 years. I'm only a month in on getting used to the SNS and the weather hasn't been cooperative. Prior to the SNS, I'd been using a Smokenator for the past 10 years (predecessor to the SNS).

All in with a SNS you're looking at less than $300 with a cover.

find used on FB.

The BGE/Kamado style are going to be the most versatile and forgiving if you can only have one option. If you want to smoke, I highly suggest any route, you get a temp controller/blower.

I bought a Kamado Joe from Lowes back in the fall. I never thought I'd spend that much to grill food, but I'm glad I got it. We've made everything from burgers to pizza and a Christmas turkey in it, and it's all been really good.

I'm no grill expert, but the kamado style grills live up to the billing, in my opinion.

The Smokey Mountains are badass. But I have the 22", and regret it. It's absurdly big. Unless you're trying to cook 6 butts regularly, get the 18".

That said, I've been using a pellet grill for a couple years, and will never switch back. Get high quality pellets, like Lumber Jack, and they work amazingly well. And frick Traegars. I have a Green Mountain Jim Bowie, and love it. I might get smaller next time, but pellet grills are the best way to cooking with indirect heat, imo.

But if you're set on charcoal, Weber is the best. I still use my Smokey Joe to cook steaks (that or sous vide and a blow torch). Though with burgers, I've been living my Blackstone griddle.

Those things look really cool. My next pellet grill, might just end up being an attachment you can hook up to a Weber kettle. I'm looking to downsize things around my house soon.

The Masterbuilt Gravity series is a gamechanger. Nothing else like it on the market right now - a charcoal grill that can sear or smoke, and doesn't have to be babied to get the right temp, simply load the hopper and set your temp. You couldn't give me a pellet smoker, they're almost all trash, but the gravity-fed charcoal is something totally different.

0-700 degrees in less than 15 minutes, or cook low and slow for hours. They thought of almost everything. If you get the 800 series from Wal-Mart, it even comes with a removeable griddle.

Weber is great, Kamado Joe is awesome, Big Green Eggs are amazing, but I'm all in on the Masterbuilt Gravity stuff and I grill/smoke pretty much every week, sometimes multiple times per week.

Weber Smokey Joe

My 1st Weber; I liked it so much I had them pack it up when I left Alaska for Arizona when I was in the military, instead of just buying a new one
