Do you stop for a funeral procession?

I was walking on the sidewalk yesterday and heard a loud siren from a single police car. I looked behind me and there were like 30-40 cars following behind with a hearse immediately following the police car.
I didn't know what to do so I just stopped, took my baseball-cap off, and stood still.
Some cars on the road stopped and pulled to the side...but other cars kept driving around them, blowing their horns, and other people walking on the sidewalk just stared at me like I was crazy and just kept walking.
I didn't know what to do, but just did what I thought was respectful in that moment.
I would rather do that, but some people just keep speeding on with their lives, and I guess I can't blame them considering it was a 4-lane highway in a quasi-busy Medium-Sized Town.
I felt like an idiot though, but I wanted to show my respect in some way.
I was just wondering about what you other people do in other cities or towns.
I don't think that it was an "important" person who died, but it was still a human being.
I still feel like I looked liked a complete fool though. But I did it nontheless.
Is this tradition in other towns/cities?
It was just an odd situation to be in.

Yes, it's traditional to stop in most of Kentucky. Be careful in northern Kentucky, though. Those fools will run you over if you stop.

Everybody stops in my part of Texas

It's mainly a southern thing to stop but in high traffic areas very few people will stop

I don't stop. The person in the back of the hearse doesn't give a shite. Show respect while people are alive.

Standard 2-lane road, yes I pull over and stop.
Divided highway no. Just too dangerous.

But what about the family members who actually cared for that individual?

I give them the right of way they are legally obligated to get. Pulling off the road for anything short of an obstruction or vehicle breakdown is stupid and not necessarily the safest choice.

I do if it seems to be what others are doing. Saw this first in Tennessee at a funeral I was attending. It was in a small town. Very nice gesture.

Yup, exactly. Although i commute on a 6 lane road and i noticed people on both sides stop for school buses knowing full well none of those kids are coming from the other side of the road.

Recently got stuck behind one on the interstate; they drove over the center line at 55mph and wouldn't let anyone pass. I was at a complete loss on what to do; continued for 40 miles.

Yeah especially with police escort

As long as my pulling over as a show of respect doesn't pose a danger, I do.

You should stop. You were correct to stop, take off your hat out of respect, and wait.

I will stop on a two-lane, but not a four-lane highway.
