How many small time farmers are here? I used to have a moderate sized garden when I lived on lookout mountain. Corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc. Everything did great except for my melons. It's that time of year and I am thinking of growing a couple of tomato plants but I don't have the great spot to plant since I moved. I may try the hanging plants. How about it?

What could I have done wrong with my melons? They got plenty of sunlight and a fortune in water but never got big. My potatoes and peanuts failed as well.

Use shite as fertilizer and eat said shite.

I actually like gardening by the way. Weed pulling is a major buzzkill for me.

I have a 80x40 I plow up every year. Summer crop has okra, squash, beans, eggplant, potatoes and a variety of peppers and tomatoes with some herbs. Winter crop is smaller, kale, snow peas,lettuce,ect.. I have apple, pear and fig tree's along with some berries.

My family has always done it on a smaller scale. I grew a passion for it in my teens. While I still love it now in my twenties, time and work is a issue at times but the feeling at the end of the summer looking back and seeing how much food you grew/shared is very rewarding to me.

I had a similar size plow on lookout mountain and the work mounted up. I worked from 7 to 5 and then came home and spent an hour a day on weeds and water. Worth it.

I moved to Attalla last year because my children wanted to attend Etowah instead of Gadsden City but I don't have a sweet garden spot that would get enough sunlight thanks to walnut and pecan trees. What can I grow that would survive it?

Lots of lettuces and greens like spinach, kale, collards, swiss chard, ectt. Broccoli can do good in shady areas. Beets and radishes do well too.

Most of the time if your growing something for the fruit it's gonna need full sun but if it's for the leafs it can be planted in a shady area.

Thank you very much. I will try some of those greens and radishes. May try to grow a couple of tomato plants in buckets in the corner. Again, I appreciate it.

I grow a very small garden of tomatoes each year. It is about 15 plants. I also grow some in large 15 gal buckets. I find the 5 gal buckets to be a bit too small and hard to keep watered in peak summer. Even the 15 gal, I can water before I leave work and find them wilted by the time I get home. Watering will perk them back up, but any fruit on the plant will get blossom rot from it. Putting some sphagnum peat moss in the soils and mulching the top seems to help hold the moisture.

In Louisiana, North and South Carolina, all did well. But I have had a time of it here in Florida. I live near brackish water, with a very shallow water table level. Also the sun radiation in the Panhandle seems to be more of an issue here than anywhere else I have lived.

I have tried several approaches to include box types, all failed. Next time around I am going to go with an outdoor hydroponics units with live fish in the circulation tank for fertilization.

I love tomatoes so I grow a 10' x 10' garden of them. I dont grow anything else.

I used to do a bunch of okra because wife loves it and puts it in freezer for gumbos. She can get enough from her dad so I quit.

I would love to move and put in a bigger garden and add snap beans, bell peppers, onions, shallots, garlic, and maybe some sweet corn. Oooh baby I would be in tall cotton then!

I usually help out my parents with their small suburban garden. Tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, cucumbers, and string beans are regulars.

I'd like to do a small container garden on our balcony but it probably doesn't get enough sun. I may try some tomatoes and peppers.
