Is Birmingham trying to get an MLS bid?

Not really. NASL or USL Pro would be a more likely option.

Ah. I mean if the city is building a brand new stadium, it would be a great idea to get in it while they can. Not that I've ever been to an MLS match, I follow Arsenal, so I did watch them play the Red Bulls when I went to NYC, but I think long term it's a cool thing to have. Especially downtown. FC Dallas is in Frisco, and while it's great for that area as the Rangers AA affiliate is there, the high school teams play there, the Pro Soccer Hall of Fame is moving there, and the Dallas Cowboys new training facility/palace of excess is as well... it doesn't beat actually having sports in the downtown area.

P.S. I'll never forgive Laura Miller for letter the Cowboys go to Arlington.

It would be nice, but Birmingham is too far down the list of cities vying for a team.

With Atlanta getting an MLS team this year, I can't imagine Bham trying to get one anytime soon. While Bham has a fairly decent soccer community, I doubt it's enough to support an MLS franchise long term.

Meh. It's not that hard. Sell them to the young hipster crowds and local businesses. Soccer stadiums aren't that big.

No doubt. The Dome was just a stupid idea. It didn't fulfill a true need. The plan was basically building a dome and then hoping "they" will come.

you will still have to average 15k+ per game. That will be extremely tough in Birmingham, especially with Atlanta getting a head start. I don't even know who could own a Birmingham team that would be able to nearly as much money into the team as the Atlanta owners will.

Been to an FC Dallas game at the Frisco park. Really cool venue and experience and they have good fan support.

Would be awesome. Color scheme works with the Barons colors. It's a sign. So it is written, so shall it be. Dibs. We called it.

I'll go ahead and say it. Saban to the Birmingham Raiders.

Hot Tub Time Machine

The Birmingham Stallions competed in all three USFL seasons, 1983–1985. During their run, they were one of the USFL's more popular teams, and seemed to have a realistic chance of being a viable venture had the USFL been better run.

1983 9 9 0 4th Central --
1984 14 4 0 1st EC Southern Won Quarterfinal (Tampa Bay) Lost Semifinal (Philadelphia)
1985 13 5 0 1st EC Won Quarterfinal (Houston) Lost Semifinal (Baltimore)

Birmingham is the 2nd largest city in the nation without a professional league team. Vegas is #1. Of course that is according to Hallman. I asked him what is the likelihood of us getting a pro-team and basically said no chance. I always thought NBA would be our best chance but he said if anything it would be NFL because of revenue sharing.

Of course you gotta think that we could somehow get a PGA tourney.

I thought Austin, TX was number 1 or 2

the Regions Tradition is a good event and is considered a major on the Champions Tour

We had one all but sewn up. Can't remember if it was the Tour Championship(currently played in Atlanta at East Lake) or another tourney, but it was supposed to be at Shoal Creek. Forget if it was the PGA or Shoal Creek that backed out, but I think Shoal Creek did. This went down 10 or so years ago and is according to a friend that's a member there.

I love the Regions, but let's be honest...it's a glorified exhibition. I'm talking a tour stop that actually has highlights on Sportscenter.

Birmingham isn't the second largest metro without a pro franchise but it is one of a handful of metro areas without a pro franchise that has the buying power to support pro leagues other than major league baseball. Las Vegas, Austin, Louisville, Norfolk/VA Beach, Greensboro/Winston Salem, Hartford, Greenville/Spartanburg, and Omaha are the others.

I know this is long for most OT posters, but it's very enlightening. It discusses that barrier, and explores the potential of not just incorporating the Civic Center/Uptown area into the rest of town, but finally rehabbing the historic (now shitty) neighborhoods to the north of it.

It turns out that a substantial portion of this alternate already exists.
