As an Ole Miss grad living in DC, I can tell you that you're wrong as hell. Marylanders have Southern traits, sure, but they're far from Southern. They wouldn't fit in in MS, AL, LA, TN, GA, etc.

Go to Bethesda all the time for work...Definitely feels more northeastern than southern. Can't speak for the rest of the state though.

Of course they're Yankees.

Yes.
Unless Maryland recently became Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia.

I'd just call them Mid-Atlantic folk, not Yankees.

Yes. Virginia is only categorized as Southern based on its extensive history and Appalachian terrain. Otherwise, North Carolina has become the fringe state of the new South

Maryland is not southern. Of course they have some farms and rednecks but so does NY.

You dumb and have never been to most of VA.

Hell yes. However, West Virginia and Virginia def. count as the South. Missouri does not fyi.

Been there, gotten the VA is for lovers bumper sticker.
They're Southern in the sense of history and Richmond and blah blah. But I don't count them as the South in the same sense as Georgia, Alabama, Carolina, Mississippi, and Tennessee are the South.
Just doesn't have the same feel to it.
ETA: Also, keep in mind that I consider Florida a northern state

Lived there for a couple of years when I worked in Arlington. I thought it was a "Northern" State. The people from the Northeast thought it was a "Southern" State. Meh.

They may walk and talk like they're rednecks from the South, but I more closely associate them with the rust belt than the bible belt. Not all Appalachians are Southern.

If you have to ask if someone is a Yankee, you are a Yankee and they are too.
