Any current or former AU students on the OT ever buy a trailer during school?

As opposed to renting an apartment or buying a condo?

Looking for pros and cons.

Never heard of this happening. Know a lot of AU grads who bought one after graduating though.

That AU student trailer tradition is one of the oddest in modern college culture. I'm all about embracing your heritage. But, damn.

I had a friend do it (no, really he did) and he seemed to have a great time. It was bigger than an apartment.

I know a guy that did it. Bought a tiny 1 bedroom trailer and used it through his entire college career including medical school.

There used to not be a lot of apartments in AU and the ones that were there were overpriced. There also werent enough dorms to even support a majority of the freshman at one point. Auburn, being close to a rural area and being in alabama had some trailer parks that made sense for student housing. it allowed someone to have their own area for dogs, parking, etc.. and the ability to own and sell later.

In the last 10-15 years the number of apartments/student housing/dorms has increased so much that trailers are fading quite significantly for student housing

An Aubie friend of mine bought a new one when he started school in the early 90's. He used it throughout his academic career. Afterwards, he rented it until it was paid off then sold it. I think he ended up breaking even after all was said and done.

A buddy of mine bought one for $10k that we lived in for 5 years. His lot fee and bills on the trailer are $250ish/month so he kept it as a gameday place.

EDIT... I'm not an Aubie, but trailers are a great choice for college kids.

My room mate bought a used trailer for cheap during college. I rented from him for cheap. We had more space than most apartment dwellers and we saved money. I felt more secure in the trailer park than I did at apartments.

IMO, the only downside is your "image" is tarnished, if you care about that stuff. You have to put up with trailer trash neighbors, but apartment neighbors make more noise.

Every time there is a Tornado Watch, High Wind Advisory, et Cetera, you need to head elsewhere...

In the early 90's it was the way to have a yard and be outside unless you got lucky on a house rental. Like someone said above the apartment situation was pretty bad and dorms were very limited. I rented one for several years and had friends that owned them or their parents did. Lots of those that owned them had siblings before or after that used them then rented them out after they were out. I know some of the parks have changed drastically on the make up so I would only do it if you know you will be in a student heavy park.

I know several people that have done it recently for their kids at AU. Seems to work out for them as they tend to have more room, can have pets and costs less over the 4 years than renting an apartment. My son looked at renting a trailer at AU, but luckily we found an old duplex pretty close to campus.

We have a condo in Tallahassee (hangs head) that we cover all my son's expenses with 2 roommates. If you can buy something reasonably in most any college town you can save a ton of money. Not sure what we will do after he graduates next year, but I will break even if it sells for what we paid.

They still are. That's why I'm asking.

With 3 kids at 3 different colleges, I'm also looking at cost. A 10k used trailer is basically disposable. Plus, taking on a roommate would generate that in rent in less than three years.

Kid needs to live in a dorm first year. Is he/she going greek? If so there is a decent chance that they will have to live in the house/hall. But buying a trailer is not a bad way to go if you can front the cost. You can almost certainly resell for however much you paid for it.

If you are getting a trailer I would highly consider Ridgewood Village. It is mainly college kids and the management does a real good job of keeping trash out.

I bought a trailer in Ridgewood back in 2004. It was a 1983 trailer, paid $4k for it. Had complete freedom, dogs, a roommate for 1 year, low cost for everything. Sold it in 2007 for $5k. Its since been removed, I think they instituted a 30 yr max life.

Agree 100%, but even with the Village and other new housing, there aren't enough rooms on campus for all incoming freshmen. There's a waitlist.

i had a buddy whos dad got him a trailer freshman year out at Conway Acres. I wasnt there too often bc i didnt go to auburn but i enjoyed staying there. the overwhelming majority are college student and sprinkled in are a few adults. it seemed like it was always a lot of fun being out there and not worrying about the prim and proper
