Tony even said at the beginning of the show he only thought of Mississippi as racist rednecks
Honestly from my experience Alabama fits this definition much more than MS.
It's really not that bad...we probably interact with black people way more than your average white american. When you choose live in an area that's 75% black you can't be that racist..much of the culture in the delta comes from the black community and a lot of the white people in the area are proud of the blues culture and assimilate pretty well.
MS gets the racist stereotype due to the fact that people here aren't politically correct. They speak the truth in a straight forward manner..but if you know them personally you know that they would give the shirt off their back to a black neighbor way before any lily white suburbanite from NYC would.

Hit the nail on the head. Blacks and whites are equally responsible for the culture the Delta has (some better than others). And that's one reason I'm proud to have grown up there.

Oxford MS is a lovely, incongruously eccentric little island. A mutation. A college town. A magnet for writers, thinkers & oddballs-Bourdain

Two lines too many.
Let me guess, he was wearing a fedora and was sporting a 5 day beard because he wanted to put forth the pseudo-intellectual, put-upon southern writer look? How's that, am I in the ballpark?

'Nuff said for the reason for so much hate, I gets it now.
That whole bunch seemed a little arrogant to me, but hey, I'm no writer.

The table of writers seemed like the type of group whose collective asses would be physically beaten by Ernest Hemingway.
