I'm looking forward to the segment in this tiny little shack of a bar that's in the middle of nowhere.

Unless there's more than one Po' Monkey's juke joint in the delta, I've been to that place back in college.

It was very cool. We had dominated by college kids that night. You walked in and there was this group of old black dudes playing cards immediately to your right. One of them was the owner. The ceilings were maybe 7 feet. You could see on the floors where several different shacks and trailers had been put together to make it one building.

The band we were all there to see was some local rock band. I don't even remember their name now, but the place was PACKED and I just remember feeling sure that the floor was gonna cave in.

To be honest from the preview they've been showing on CNN it looks like the episode is going to be dominated by the black culture in that region. Like focusing on jazz/blues and soul food

I had some good friends at DSU so Cleveland/The Delta were like my second home in college.

That's a short preview of the episode. Seems to be a more positive take on Mississippi than what we are accustom to on tv. I'll probably check it out.

Thanks UM. One thing that makes me love Bourdain is that he always treats the cultures/places he visits with the utmost respect and never treats them as inferior. Gonna watch the preview now but I figured he'd treat y'all right.

This.

And what I find really great is he's able to be critical and observant of negative or just the reality of things in a way that is respectful and gracefully blunt.

Bourdain is awesome.

His show on CNN is a more mature no reservations. Lil more politics/more lifestyles/more culture/less food

Although his episode on Louisiana for no reservations was awesome.

Should be good if he's taking it all in with Currence too. Loved Boure and am anxious to take in some of his other Oxford eateries.

Ironically read about Eudora Welty today working with some kids.

If anything its the opposite. He left the travel channel because they were telling him what to do. CNN told him he can do anything he wants.

Interesting, didn't know about that. I likdled NR on travel, but his work on CNN is awesome as well.

He won't do the typical condescending carp that mist shows do when they do a show in a place like Mississippi.

It's interesting, because he tries to come off as a smug, knowitall New Yorker, but if you read his books you'll see that he actually has a tremendous amount of respect and curiosity for different cultures.

Love his show, and I don't generally like those types of shows because the hosts tend to try to make them these feel-good stories about everything that's right about that particular city. Bourdain is painfully honest at times. When he did the Detroit episode, he made a commentary remark along the lines of "everyone always tries to say 'Detroit is coming back.' Is it coming back? HECK NO, it's not. It's never coming back. However, there are some interesting parts of it."

Bourdain is great, always watch his shows. One of things I really like about the show is he will go to some really fancy arse restaurant, but raves the most about "poor peoples" food. He seems to be genuine in his curiosity about the food and culture wherever he is visiting.
