Beat the refs and a completely inept Wildcat team.
The officiating was terrible for about the first 10-12 minutes of the second half! Coincidentally that is when UK was having most of their success... so I could be a little biased.
Seriously - officiating wasn't that bad. We did pick up 4 fouls in the first 2.5 minutes of the second half and it seemed like nothing was getting called on UK there for a bit, and I think things settled back down and they let the teams play to see who won. In the end they had one less PF than we did and shot like 6 more free throws. I think that is pretty normal for the home team to have a slight edge. Had we made a few more front ends we would have had several more FT attempts. Of course the foul and FT gap did narrow as they fouled several times at the end.
I think realistically, and this is bad news for both UK and MU, we are essentially the same team (overall the stats were pretty close). UK looked lost and out of sync and really couldn't handle defensive pressure and didn't shoot well (sound familiar?). Hopefully the difference is we seem to be trending up with the return of some key pieces, Kentucky seems to be floundering and rudderless.

Truth! - they are not easy to come by, even for elite teams. Really difficult for good teams. Rare for mediocre and bad teams. We need to take them when we can (should have had another at ND).
Great having Stone and Pearce - I think these guys are still shaking off some rust. Another big positive that may not be as obvious was Phillips picked up foul 4 (at least one of those fouls was questionable) with over 9 to play, but he was able to play under control and was on the floor and a factor for most of the last 5 minutes without picking up number 5. Gates managed that well, and Phillips showing some growth playing under control. He also seems to be getting more confident in that jump hook.

Stone and Pierce have been out. They combined for 19 pts on roughly 50% shooting, 9 Rebounds against Florida and 25 pts and 12 rebounds against Kentucky. Stone shot lights out against UK - 6-10 from 3. Pierce provided some clutch rebounds.
There’s other factors. But they are clearly difference makers for us.

Have not paid a ton of attention to the Bball team while football is still going on.
Hoping you guys can explain what is going on. How can a team that looked so completely incompetent and poorly coached against KU and especially Illannoy summon the functionality to compete, much less beat, Florida and Kentucky???
What is going on??? After the Illini game, I thought we were looking at a 1 or 2 win SEC season.
Impossible to say for sure. At this point the only quantifiable change is getting Stone and Pierce on the court. Are they that big of a difference maker? I wouldn't think so but it is hard to say what else is different. We did better at attacking the lane the last 2 games than vs Illini and ku. We also competed much better on the glass but the other thing to consider is that UF and UK are just nowhere near illini or ku in terms of quality.

Huh. Thanks Bass and 98.
What a big turnaround. Hope Stone and Pierce stay healthy and on the court.

Suddenly, our schedule looks apt to a decent run. Our next few games:
@ Ole Miss
Auburn
@ LSU
UGA
OU
@ Alabama
Miss State
@ South Carolina
@ A&M
Texas
Besides @ Alabama, the other games are quite winnable. Crazy to go from thinking we might be 2023-2024 again to potentially having a 12-1 start going into mid February.

I dont really see @OM and Auburn games as very winnable. I'd put both in under 50% category. Auburn has done really well vs teams not currently ranked in the top 7-8.

I just saw this and wanted to leave it here before moving on to Ole Miss.

That was a fun watch.

So watched most of the Ole Miss game ...
Gates rotations make zero sense. There were times where my son and I were like ... who is the scorer on the court cause we had rotations with Goblin running point, Randall, Phillips, Boatang and Pierce/Mitchell/ Robinson/Stone/Crews (who are all drawing doubles ...)
Again, Gates has to shorten his bench and 2 or 3 of the 5 listed last have to be in at all times or there are going to be scoring droughts and turnovers.
Evidently Mack and Northweather are in Gates dog house (deservedly) but these rotations and FT shooting are what is killing the team ...

Boateng is a dead letter.
He can’t do anything on the court.
Phillips always brings passes to him down and allows double and triple teams. He’s not the best passer out of those situations either.
Ole Miss picked up the defensive intensity in the second half. They had two players have standout games. If either one of them hadn’t had their best games of the season; we win. If we hit free throws even at a modest clip, we win.
It was a disappointing loss. But I’m so thankful that we haven’t replicated the Illini and kU games in conference play. In short, it doesn’t look like Gates is so incompetent that we have to go looking for another coach.

He still needs to get to the second weekend of the ncaat for real job security.

They're next 2 practices should be 5 hours each long shooting FTs

yup. Really odd that this is an issue because unless I'm getting too old to remember right, I thought FT shooting has typically been a strength under Gates. I dont mean just the volume of FTs, I thought our team percentage was usually in the mid 70s or better.
Posted on 1/12/26 at 3:00 pm to notsince98
There is not one guy on this team who can be relied on to make FTs outside of Crews.
Posted on 1/13/26 at 11:57 pm to notsince98
Richardson has lost his focus shooting FTs. He used to be very solid. He’s borderline unreliable from the line now.

another bad night of FTs. Can't keep getting away with it.
First place in SEC after 4 games is an odd place to be.

Mitchell was the sole problem. 6-14. The rest of the team was 15-17.
